Re: What does your desktop look like?

Yes, that's what I did. Used gnome-tweak-tool to do the Esco titlebars under "Windows". It's just that the title bars are blue. I'd like to make them green, to match the gnome-wise icon set.

Gonna do some serious cruising and detail combing through gconf-editor tonight. There's got to be a way to change that color.

Gnome 3 shell, dunno yet. Am kind of afraid of that one, since I'm not using gnome-shell (wouldn't I have to be, in order to use that?).

See, the thing that's tricky here, is that the Clearlooks-colors theme is supposed to give the choice of which color to have for that theme; wise, wine, noble, brave, etc., and that would be that, for title bars, everything in Gnome 2. It's not doing that in Gnome 3. The theme takes for the icons, but doesn't take overall like it used to any more with Gnome 3. So, the titlebars come out wrong color-wise, no matter what theme one is using for windows.

Edit: Better way of explaining:

In Gnome 2, if I were to set my theme to Clearlooks-colors, and then set the icon theme to gnome-wise, gnome-brave, what-have-you, then everything, including titlebars, would set to the icon color to match (and would give me the option of which one to use). It's not doing that in Gnome 3. I've set the window theme to Clearlooks-colors-Metacity, as you can see, and that is what would determine the titlebar color *normally* in Gnome 2. It's not taking. It's keeping the titlebars *just* with gnome-brave (which is blue), and I got that only because earlier I set this window theme here to Esco instead (which is better than that white, yes, BUT, is not doing what it's supposed to do color-wise):

Image

I'm thinking on tomorrow, going to and combing through gnome-look.org, and seeing if there's been a new version of gnome-colors, or Clearlooks-colors-Metacity either one, put out for Gnome 3. It's where I've always used this theme from before. Who knows? perfectska *may* have put one out for it. If there has been one, then whatever window theme I use in gnome-tweak-tool, will keep with the icon colors I'm using, whether Esco or what (Esco is just a titlebar "shape" in Gnome2; the color of it was determined by gnome-colors).

Gnome3 does have its limitations, but I have a feeling they'll be working on those as they go. At least, I hope they will. At the end of the day, to be color-coordinated like I like to be, when I'm not using compiz, I need the titlebars to be green, which is why I was hoping so hard your hacks would work (but they didn't :( ).

viking60 wrote:The title bars in fallback should be customizable like in the good 'ol days.

The problem is, the reality is, they're not. :(
And I think it's *because* there is no more "Appearance Properties" like there was in Gnome2. Remember that? We could do anything we wanted to with that thing, and always be happy. There is no more of that. :(

See, even the "Tropical" theme doesn't look very, erm, "tropical"... and looks EXACTLY like the "exotic" theme, to the tee...

Wait, it just dawned on me. I'm wondering if everything is blue, brown, or white (and even the white has blue outlines for the buttons in the titlebars), in the themes, because your metacity hack worked? Just remembered, I never changed it from your colours. Maybe that's what you were trying to tell me? The only one that isn't one of those colours, is aquadreams, and that's not even very... "aqua-like".

Meh, even if so, we shouldn't have to go through all that to make things look the way we want.

Okay, changing to my colours, going for a reboot in a bit.

Nope, that wasn't it. Still blue. :\

May go back to mutter, etc. just long enough to see what it does then. Then again, may not want to be arsed. :(

The only theme in Gnome3-shell is Adwaita and that is the one we changed- It should not affect anything else.

So, the only thing it affects is the gtk theme? That's what Adwaita is, is a GTK+ theme.

So, I'm wondering therefore, if there's a way to hack the Gnome theme I'm on, to get it to take over the title bars. OR, if I'll have to wait for another GTK+ them to come out. The few others that there are, are deplorable. OR, do I have to hack a Metacity file.

Geez...

:(

All this over title bars, which we should be able to change to what we want to, with just the click of a mouse.

Another thing they've taken away. The disk utility applet. Like we'd have absolutely NO reason to want to mount a disk. <sarcasm>

I would if there were something to take a pic of. That utility is a desktop thing, so it is NOT off-topic, and I want it back. Period. I see no harm in discussing the desktop as well, be it good or bad - I started this thread, and did not mean, or think at the time that it absolutely had to be *just* "purty pics". We can actually talk about our desktops, too, y'know. If you want to just have "Happy Land" with it, and have it be all about that, then go for it and remove these posts that I'm posting about this, because I WON'T shut up about this lack-of-desktop that we now have and lack-of-choice that we now have with it, and you can take that one to the bank, and I will not remove them myself.

Oh wait, I do happen to have a pic of a desktop here, with ONE OF THE THINGS THAT ARE MISSING ON IT NOW THAT I WANT BACK (bastards). It's made things extremely difficult for this kid, who blew a disc in her back last Monday, and who now has it to where it's very hard to type from the pain, and who doesn't need the extra typing it takes now via CLI that it takes to simply mount a disk (at least it SHOULD BE simply, not that it is any more), so every little bit helps that I can do, y'know, ON THE DESKTOP. Where the arrow points to in this is what I'm desperately in need of, an applet in Gnome 2:

Image

This DESKTOP they can take and shove up their proverbial arses, with all the hacks and work and crapola we have to do in order to get relatively functional for OUR INDIVIDUAL NEEDS, that I refuse to do any more of:

No happy land, and no attempt to shut you up. Just wondering if you could make another thread (where you won't shut up :-D ) I am deeply skeptical about the Gnome philosophy myself. People would expect pics here so here we go.....

Nature stuff - cool. My point is, it's a desktop discussion. We should be able to speak of what the desktop lacks, too, along with that. It's still desktop.

Yeah I'll go along with that - but if you get to engaged there will be a lot of opinions and no pics - so in a thread like this lets keep it interesting with the occasional pic.
Is all :-D (remember I am an exotic foreigner who barlely can read - I need those pics).
