Wallpaper lost through mageia-xfce-config update

Postby dedanna1029 » 04 Aug 2013, 23:56

I'm a bit (to say the least) ticked right now. I'd just got my working 64-bit desktop set up, going, and being used after the installation.

Well, along came an update yesterday to mageia-xfce-config, with a bit of "advice" after the updates (I use urpmi on da cli, I don't touch the gui [MCC] for much unless I need it for something explicitly). That "advice" went as so:

Code: Select all

----------------------------------------------------------------------
More information on package mageia-xfce-config-3-2.2.mga3.noarch
Xfce doesn't update its configuration files in user's home dir by itself.

(Lookie here) --->Please remove these directories manually in your home, after updating
mageia-xfce-config and then restart your X session.

~/.config/xfce4
~/.config/Thunar<---

Do NOT to forget about first backing up those directories.

So, for once, I decide to be a good little girl. Renamed those two folders, and rebooted. I came back up into XFCE, tried to re-set up my desktop as I'd had it, and guess what? The background I'd specifically chosen was no longer there, and neither were others that I would use. The new ones are butt-ugly, IMO. Here's what I had:

Anyone know where the hell I can find that background now? They should've left the old along with the new, IMO - speific distro devels don't think about these things. They just throw in the update as-is, and don't think about the fact that they can modify it to suit all user's needs.

I'm hoping Manjaro has it. Things like this are really starting to tick me off in Mageia. IMO it is a great distro, but it's limited in several ways, and those limitations are getting to me. I know it's because they're young yet, but I'm getting to where "young yet" doesn't suit my needs.

I'm going to have a look at http://xfce-look.org/ to see if it's there, but if anyone knows where I can find it right off, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.

Well I can see why the advise is given because they wanted to make sure that you get a functional Xfce. Although I cannot understand why they did this...
I am not at my Xfce box right now but naturally your config files are different so you will have to set it again.
If it is in the default location you should be able to set it again via you GUI.
(/usr/share/xfce4/backdrops ? )
Manjaro 64bit on the main box -Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz and nVidia Corporation GT200b [GeForce GTX 275] (rev a1. + Centos on the server - Arch on the laptop.

Wallpaper lost through mageia-xfce-config update

Postby dedanna1029 » 05 Aug 2013, 02:37

I don't have that folder. :(

Code: Select all

[galynda@galynda ~]$ ls /usr/share/xfce4
doc/  eyes/  helpers/  panel/  panel-plugins/  terminal/  weather/
[galynda@galynda ~]$

Also, urpmf is having a heckuva time listing the files included in mageia-xfce-config-3-2.2.mga3.noarch ... in fact, now that it's done, it could list none of the files included.

Edit: I think I'm going to try a downgrade on that, replace with the old files it said to rename in /home, and see what happens.
Which, it looks like, also isn't going to work:

Code: Select all

[root@galynda ~]# urpmi --downgrade mageia-xfce-config
The following package has to be removed for others to be upgraded:
mageia-xfce-config-3-2.2.mga3.noarch
 (in order to install mageia-xfce-config-3-2.2.mga3.noarch) (y/N) n

That's not downgrading, going from the same to the same. :P

[solved] wallpaper found

Postby dedanna1029 » 05 Aug 2013, 03:50

I looked at xfce4-artwork in MCC, at the files, and found the xfce wallpapers to be in /usr/share/backgrounds/xfce/. I looked at the folder in Thunar, to see what was there. I scrolled it back and forth, and found the wallpaper in there. I went back to my Desktop Settings to see why I wasn't seeing all the wallpapers listed in MCC there, and found that the new xfce-ubik2 wallpaper had changed from the new one it showed earlier, back to the one that I was using initially. I've shut down since the first couple times I looked in Desktop Settings since the "upgrade" when it showed something different for that file. Maybe that reset it, because it was finally there.

Thanks for the help. :s
