[solved, update turned it off] Sound in Arch; no sound input

Postby dedanna1029 » 09 Apr 2011, 09:12

Well, it seems some updates have fubarred my sound again in Arch. I get sound in, but when I run the speaker tests in both Gnome's Sound in the system menu and KDE's system settings, there's no sound on them at all. This is on my Audigy 2 card - I can hear playback on youtube videos, and several other things, but the speaker tests fail in each of Gnome and KDE, and output nothing. I'm also not getting any notification sounds in KDE. Just upgraded it to 4.6.2-1... hhmmm...

Ran alsamixer -c 0, nothing's changed there, so am kinda lost.

This is a revolting development.

I think is fine, about media playback but not with system sounds playback.

Do not know much about the internals of the program but I think it has to do with which (OSS, ALSA) one is using for the system sounds.

Mine is set to pulseaudio, and is routed through alsa. It's always been that way.

Well, I found it, and it appears it ain't my fault:

Code: Select all

:) padevchooser
padevchooser: error while loading shared libraries: --->libnotify.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory<-----
.:[ dedanna@dedanna.rocks.net : 01:01:36 : ~ ]:.
:) whereis libnotify
libnotify: /usr/lib/libnotify.so<----- /usr/include/libnotify

There appears not to be libnotify.so.1.

So, I can either wait for a pulseaudio upgrade, or I can do a symlink, and hope and pray to gods that works.

Code: Select all

:) pacman -Ss libnotify
extra/libnotify 0.7.1-1.1 [0.03 MB] ------>[installed]
    Desktop notification library
extra/python-notify 0.1.1-10 [0.01 MB] ------->[installed]
    Python bindings for libnotify
community/ibamtray 0.02-4 [0.02 MB]
    system tray ibam frontend based off vubat with libnotify support

Take your pick.

Edit: OR, I could try downgrading to previous version of libnotify.

It appears that the current version of notification-daemon requires libnotify 0.7.1:

Code: Select all

Description: Notification daemon for the desktop notifications framework
Depends on: libsexy>=0.1.11, libwnck>=2.28.0, gconf>=2.28.0, gstreamer0.10-base>=0.10.25, libnotify>=0.7.1, libglade>=2.6.4, hicolor-icon-theme
Required by:
Size: 312 kB
Packager: Ionut Biru <ibiru@archlinux.org>
Built: Mon Mar  7 04:25:02 2011
Installed: Sat Mar 19 09:14:46 2011
Reason: Excplicitly installed

The problem is, they forgot to upgrade libnotify 0.7.1 with the necessary libnotify.so.1. :( So, yay, if I want to try downgrading, I gotta downgrade the whole frikking shootin' sh'bang. :(

Well done, Arch devels, well done! <sarcasm> :B

I do not understand this AT ALL. Why the hell didn't they just upgrade everything with libnotify.so.4????

Code: Select all

# ls /usr/lib | grep libnotify
libnotify.so
libnotify.so.1
libnotify.so.4
libnotify.so.4.0.0

You're seeing libnotify.so.1 now because I'm trying out the symlink.

Edit: Which worked out splendidly, I might add:

Code: Select all

:) padevchooser

** (padevchooser:5932): WARNING **: pa_browser_new() failed.

I get this whether I symlink with /usr/lib/libnotify.so, OR /usr/lib/libnotify.so.4

Oh, YAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYyyyyyy............ :mandriva: :f

And, uh, yeah, I wasn't kidding when I said they forgot to include libnotify.so.1. I've extracted the packages for both current and previous versions of libnotify. Notice a difference?

Previous version:

Current version (yep, they forgot it):

Houston, I found me a bug. :evil: Oh, the Arch forum is SO going to love me tomorrow. So will AUR... the maintainer of padevchooser will probably have to re-write it... when it's deprecated... Joy!

Boss, there is a patch here for padevchooser in Arch, but honestly, I have no clue how to apply the thing. I realize you gave the example of how to apply a kernel patch here, but that gives me no clue how to apply patches of other kinds. Do you know what I would need to do, step by step, to apply this one?

Thanks.

Yeah, see, that's the problem with patches. I finally asked in that thread at the Arch forum. I hate to ask these things there 'cause I don't like to sound stupid, but that's the way it goes I guess. I see there's been no answers so far. Oh well, that's the way it goes when one's lost in stupidland, I guess. :(

There are there, as far as they're concerned. We all should not only be geeks, but super-geeks. :p

Meh. That's not going anywhere. I guess this is going to remain unresolved.

Pity. The sound was perfect in Arch, and now it's all effed up. Oh well...
