Diaspora - Social media with privacy!

Postby dedanna1029 » 24 Sep 2010, 03:27

Diaspora! Yep, based on ruby no less, fully open source!

A little more about the project

Be sure to watch the video here!

Soon as the alpha's out in October, I'm gone from Facebook. Every time Facebook tries to fix something that ain't broke, it screws up, and that's been at least a dozen times over the last year that I can remember. There's a rumor that today's outage was due to an attack that they're trying to cover up, due to the book or movie or something coming out. FYI, as of this writing, regardless of what the article says, Facebook still isn't fixed - I get a page load error at facebook.com right now. If they were hacked, they're probably hiring the attackers to steal our info so they can make $s off of it. :P :f

That would be really cool! I'm going to install one myself. :)

I have been following the news on CNet.
Seems that could be the end of intrusion and where you have full control of your data.

Also, could be the end of Forums as we know them.

Imagine that you can "social" network different "forums/networks" based on the contents that matters to you.

A website that you get feeds from different people that you allow rather joining a single unique group.

You can ban and be ban  from one person, rather of the group per se.

I hate to jump from forum to forum. Share ideas within people instead of groups.

It will be the beginning of Internet Clans, Guilds perhaps?

Nah, because you can have it for only that one "forum" or "group" or even "person" if you want - it's not limited to several. It's versatile enough to use however you want to; it's up to you. :)

That's the power of open source and choice. :D

http://nymag.com/news/features/establishments/68512/

It's available right now in yaourt on Arch Linux - am in the process of installing now.

Edit: And it's time! Installed just fine!

Code: Select all

To launch diaspora:
>  sudo /etc/rc.d/diaspora start
   Then access http://localhost:3000/

To create sample users (not required):
>  sudo /etc/rc.d/diaspora start
>  cd /opt/diaspora
>  sudo -u diaspora GEM_HOME=/opt/diaspora-gems rake-1.8 db:seed:dev
Then access http://localhost:3000/ and login with user 'tom' and password 'evankorth'

Yeah, have been eyeing that.

Another thing too - they still haven't got a frontend (GUI) going for it yet either, and it's a pain to have to find the commands, etc. via terminal. They haven't posted much "how to use via cli", so I had to abandon it almost as fast as I installed it. Gonna give this one some more time and go from there.
