Could be a UDP block. To bypass all this you can install zerotier-one and create a peer to peer like connection to any PC anywhere in the world.
(I am about to write up a zerotier sollution since I am currently playing arround with it). Zerotier has end to end encryption and works pretty well.
It provides an ip that you can use to communicate directly with any pc.
Manjaro 64bit on the main box -Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz and nVidia Corporation GT200b [GeForce GTX 275] (rev a1. + Centos on the server - Arch on the laptop.
