Win 8 and 10 are more insecure than Win 7

Postby viking60 » 27 Mar 2019, 13:13

In terms of privacy Windows 8 and 10 are way more insecure than Windows 7.

If you use a VPN service Windows 8 and 10 are almost designed to bypass it! +1

The DNS is the "phonebook" of the internet and that means that you and your activities can be identified and monitored.
To avoid this and maintaining your human rights you need to tunnel the DNS traffic through a proxy.
Most VPN services do this today but Windows is the OS most prone to leak:
:A
Under Windows 7 all DNS requests were made in simple order of DNS server preference, but this changed in Windows 8 when Microsoft added “‘Smart Multi-Homed Name Resolution” by default. This sends out DNS requests to all available interfaces, but only uses non-preferred servers if the main DNS server failed to respond.

This makes Windows 8.x systems somewhat liable to DNS leaks, but Windows 10 makes the situation much worse as it simply chooses whichever DNS request responds quickest. In addition to being major security risk, there are also reports of Windows 10 users suffering slow page loading and timeouts due to this issue

This has become so bad that US-CERT has issued an alert about it:

This IP leak is mainly a Windows 10 problem but it also affects Windows 8.

I guess that you have to add the DNS Server addresses manualy. Kind of see the point of using the quickest respond but I wonder, in a Network environment, with all the services around, would increase the congestion?

The problem for Tinhat people is that your ISP can see everything you browse and send it to the NSA or whomever. The speed and convenience of it is always preferred above privacy. That is a dangerous development.....

The DNS traffic is in plain text and needs to be encrypted this can be done by VPN in Linux and Windows 7. This cannot be ensured in Windows 8 and 10 which (potentially) makes a VPN wasted money.

...But then again it is probably wasted money anyway due to the Intel CPU flaw that more than likely is already exploited by all NATO governments without any possibility for us to check it or avoid it.

Unfortunately, Microsoft is ending their support for Win7. Better switch to Win10 instead.

My mom is on 7 now, and won't be upgrading it for a fair while. I'm glad. In her lifetime, she may not see the crap Windows versions.

I always say, the best OS MS ever produced was Win 2K Proffesional. Before and After, is nothing but junk.

F that. If I could've, I would have kept Mom on XP. Unfortunately, she hasn't been a Linux sell... yet.

Well, turns out I won't need to. She caught wind of Win 7 going out at the first of the year, emailed me about installing Linux. Pretty isn't what gets her, but I'm sure when she gets time she'll be going through the Linux wallpapers.
Soon as I can get $s to get to Colorado Springs, Maw, we'll git 'er installed.
