Steam will offer "pure" Windows games for Linux

Postby viking60 » 24 Aug 2018, 11:43

Steam is continuing down the Linux road and will offer more games for the Linux platform.

They have contributed to the Wine project for some time and will incorporate a modified wine in their gaming platform called Proton.

So, two years ago, we started an effort to improve the quality and performance of Windows compatibility solutions for Steam games. A lot of our work has been in the form of supporting Wine[www.winehq.org] and other existing compatibility projects. We have also been integrating these tools into the Steam client to provide the same simple plug-and-play experience offered by regular Linux games.

Furthermore steam encourages the development for for the Linux platform.

ATM the following titles are working on Linux:

    Beat Saber
    Bejeweled 2 Deluxe
    Doki Doki Literature Club!
    DOOM
    DOOM II: Hell on Earth
    DOOM VFR
    Fallout Shelter
    FATE
    FINAL FANTASY VI
    Geometry Dash
    Google Earth VR
    Into The Breach
Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012
Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013
    Mount & Blade
Mount & Blade: With Fire & Sword
    NieR: Automata
    PAYDAY: The Heist
    QUAKE
    S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl
    Star Wars: Battlefront 2
    Tekken 7
    The Last Remnant
    Tropico 4
    Ultimate Doom
    Warhammer® 40,000: Dawn of War® - Dark Crusade
    Warhammer® 40,000: Dawn of War® - Soulstorm

I have been playing Team Fortress on Manjaro Linux for years so I know that these titles are not all that Linux can handle.

Looks like the future of gaming belongs to Linux since Steam is clearly the biggest gaming company out there.

at latest if Reactos is usable and suitable, change the whole situation..

the Linux was supported to have a better system as WinNT , 1. Moneyless, 2. Custom-able, 3. not commercial so you are not punishable by law and therewith you're not illegal ..

With Reactos it is coming back one Standart of binarys, one standart of packets (exe/setups/msi)
and a conform binarytype with up to date libraries, because any can take a iso(so a copy) . can download it
and install it, with a Update-routine... and the Iso's be in able to be build every day, therewith totally up to date..
and also/still for free .. like Linux, this makes the Games Factory the way back to a WinNT-Standart..
because the customers be easy and more cheap connectible, because no developer costs ..

And at end, WinNT is more easier to handle as the hole Linux-Distros today..
if i think about on Mandrake, THIS was a good Distribution, but today can you kick it in the Trash ..
like other Distributions today also ..

So try Valve only to make money, but if Reactos exist as usable WinNT Distro
goes Munich and the whole Users back to NT Windows.
(o', i forgot, Munich is already back to Microsoft, well, then goes Munich to Reactos then maybe ;) )

this so far about Linux and Games..
it must be only dependence from a Factory, have one Standard
around the World and Free Downloadable and easy setup/custom-able..

I don't think Reactos can compete here.
As of kernel 4.18 (which I use); the Steam controllers are built into the kernel:
The Steam Controller HID driver was merged into the kernel. This allows using Valve's Steam Controller as a HID input device without needing to rely upon Steam or the user-space SC-Controller.

Valve seems to be supporting and forwarding Linux pretty well after Microsoft got to greedy for their taste.
