I've been advised by the openSUSE Google+ Community to install Tumbleweed instead, and not to upgrade. They say the upgrade for now is rather messy.

Yeah Tumbleweed is OpenSuses rolling release. If it works; I prefer the "install once and update forever" approach

In fact I think I will switch to Tumbleweed on my 13.2 install now - I'll let you know how it goes....

So the wiki tells me to move backup the old repos like this:

mkdir /etc/zypp/repos.d/old
mv /etc/zypp/repos.d/*.repo /etc/zypp/repos.d/old

However as we have established; backups take space and are for chikens so I simply removed the old ones like this:

sudo rm -R /etc/zypp/repos.d/*.repo

Then I added Tumbleweed:

zypper ar -f -c http://download.opensuse.org/tumbleweed/repo/oss repo-oss
zypper ar -f -c http://download.opensuse.org/tumbleweed/repo/non-oss repo-non-oss

zypper ar -f -c http://download.opensuse.org/update/tumbleweed/ repo-update

Time to do the distro upgrade then:

It needed me to state if I wanted to keep old apache packages ignore or remove apache - so I removed it (better to install the right one later).
Then I got a s... load of conditions from Adobe - Suse ++ where I had to read and accept etc etc so I did.

Then the upgrade started - and it is still running..... Plenty of time and opportunity to achieve the traditional OpenSuse result....me falling on my nose....
Suse tells me to:

Now go make some coffee and have a lot of fun when using our rolling release.

So I will honor the coffee part If it is going to be fun remains to be seen..

And the upgrade went - sort of.
I had to reset my keyboard to the global Valhallian locale - since it defaulted to english other than that is seems fine:

Still no Yast Gui though.
I find OpenSuse a bit buggy. There are a few things I would expect them to have under control that pure community distros don't - but that does not seem to be the case.

In Mageia the control panel fires in OpenSuse it does not

So I have to fiddle around with rpm to make zypper work again

And firefox does not start either so I cannot download that rpm - in fact this system is pretty useless now.

Well, they did say upgrading is a bit messy right now. I realise you upgraded to a previous version of it but I had the impression my source meant all-around. I have little niggles with my install which was a clean one, missing components of menus, all kinds of things, so I expect even more niggles in an upgrade.

Oh well only five days to go for OpenSuse 4.2.1 so I can repeat the circle.

Since this installation has worked for quite some time I decided to give it another chance. I downloaded the Tumbleweed net install x86_64 and will try to upgrade with that.

It reports the Yast error during upgrade and wants me to file a bug report - but we knew that.....Ignoring

It reports that it a lot of stuff failed and I can only ignore all....

The windows and the warnings pop up so often that it takes a lot of time clicking ignore and OK... I am beginning to remember why I dislike OpenSuse now

Ok After hours of installing it failed - thanks for wasting my time

Then I tried a fresh net-install and it starts and prompts looking good and fails during partitioning. So even the fresh install fails.

I am ready to conclude now:
OpenSuse is poor quality remind me to stay away from it

If you want a rpm distro with lots of backing then Centos is way better. Mageia and Fedora are alternatives - I would prefer both of them over OpenSuse atm

It is hard to see how Suse can compete with RedHat in terms of stability and reliability - but to be fair - I did play around with Tumbleweed so Fedora would be a better benchmark. And the last time I checked Fedora worked just fine.

Yeah, I think I'm done with it unfortunately. The problem is, what to replace it with.

I really like Centos. It is some hassle setting up the network because Centos does not connect by default (it is supposed to be a feature).

.. And I also have to add that I did that that OpenSuse install quite roughly ..and tend to develop a temper when I get those black eyes
Still Centos with the Fedora epel repo makes a very good desktop.

Yeah, I've run CentOS too. What version is that?

I'm also hotly tempered by things not working right now, so know the feeling.
