Get Windows XP updates until 2019!

Postby viking60 » 29 Aug 2014, 12:29

Windows XP is not officially supported anymore, but there is a maintenance of the OS for special customers. So basically all you need is to tell your Windows XP registry that you are such a special guy. +1

So open notepad and put this content in there:
berserk.reg

Code: Select all

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\WPA\PosReady]
"Installed"=dword:00000001

Save the file as berserk.reg ( I saved it in C:\ ) then navigate to it with explorer and double click the file.

You will be asked if you want to add it to the registry - which you do - and get notified that the update was successful.

That is it!
Go to Windows update and install them :smug

I had 14,3 MB of updates +1

This tip is for 32 bit only.
You can find a 64 bit workaround here

More here

Since this will keep XP artificially alive you could stop there but you might also consider installing Zorin
Manjaro 64bit on the main box -Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz and nVidia Corporation GT200b [GeForce GTX 275] (rev a1. + Centos on the server - Arch on the laptop.

Whoa, I know someone who can use this big time!

Still running XP and still getting updates!

So far so good.

Naturally I am running Windows in a VM under Linux.

That way I have a fully fledged WIndows computer in a window on my Linux for the rare occasion that I need Windows for something.

I do have a Vista DVD lying around so I could upgrade XP all the way to Windows 7 but I do not feel the need.

My understanding, XP is good for legacy systems; 7 and up is for the newer things. If I am not mistaken, there is a Kernel change on Vista and that one in particular was a fiasco. Version 7 was a more stable OS and looks and feel almost like XP. 8 is another fiasco and 10... I have mixed feelings.

However... the very best OS ever came out of Redmond, to me, was Windows 2000 Profesional. With 4 GBs of RAM, it ran like greased lightning and a breeze to get around it.
