Updated Mageia today

Mageia only lives in a VM here but I need it to help out this old laydy that has it installed (because of me).
I rearly have to help since it "just works" there - but you never know.

I have openbox with xfce4-panel running and it has been ages since I updated the box. So I did a

Code: Select all

urpmi --auto-update
today and there was a sh..load to update.

After such a long time many things can go wrong... but it didn't.

Everything went through smooth as silk and after a reboot I had the latest. I noticed that Mageia is using the 4.1 kernel while I use 4.6 at my Manjaro install but that doesn't matter as long as it works!

Mageia is good quality and it is strange that not more people reccomend it instead of Ubuntu - which in my experience is not as good and full of surprises.

It is stuff like this that matters in the long run - removing orphans now to see if I can break something....
Doing the dreaded

Code: Select all

urpme --auto-remove
and there was a load to remove. I had a brief look that nothing vital was in there and hit ENTER.
rebooted....
..and
:drummer
:drummer
everything still worked :-D

Mageia prefers not to update kernel versions in stable releases, but 4.1 is nearing EOL. The next LTS version is 4.4 (I think) and an update to 4.4.13 is now in QA. Of course I may be totally wrong about all this.

Mageia is on Kernel 4.4 now.

This old lady that I help out is happy now because I got her Brother DCP-L2500D laser printer working. I can assure you that it did not work before - there simply were no Cups drivers.

But now we can add this one to the list of working printers:
