Mageia 5 polkit and MCC error

Postby viking60 » 22 Sep 2015, 20:03

:S Jkerr what do you make of this one?

(Be patient the good stuff is at the end)
Upgraded in VB with openbox running as the only DE. My Polkit is mate-polkit and I can restart it as often as I want without getting the MCC. I added My user to wheel with

Code: Select all

usermod -G wheel viking

I know this is a bug where you are the lead violinist in the orchestra :boohoo: -and I only have it in VB; on my Mother's hardware everything is peachy.

Do you have some profound words for me here?

There is a problem with polkit in mga5, but no-one seems to know what exactly it is. It manifests itself in different ways and many users do not experience it at all.

The first problem was that polkit was not restarted after being updated. That was easily remedied, but other problems seem to have no easy fix. All desktops seem to be affected, but in different ways. A simple search of Mageia's bugzilla (https://bugs.mageia.org/) for "polkit" lists the ones that have been reported. You may find your situation covered in one of those.

Colin Guthrie seems to be the guru who has the best handle on polkit, but he's on sabbatical at present. When he returns to active participation we may get a solution, if not earlier.

Sorry, not to have any words of wisdom. As I get older that seems to be the case more and more often.

What it was doing to me after Mageia 5 installation, was when I logged into the desktop, I would have to authenticate as user via an MCC-style authentication dialog popup, and a blank untitled leafpad editor would also pop up.

What I did, was take polkit out of session startup, and rebooted. This obviously stopped the MCC-style popup to authenticate, and also stopped leafpad editor from popping up (I'm on XFCE4 desktop).

I re-enabled polkit in session startup, and haven't had an issue since with it.

Seems to be something different.
In the bug report there is this theory about online and active status

Code: Select all

grep -i state /run/systemd/users/$(id -u)

shows active in my case the gurus at Mageia say that the problem occurs when it shows online instead of active - not the case here. :snooty:
My MCC does not fire:

Code: Select all

mcc
==== AUTHENTICATING FOR org.mageia.drakconf.pkexec.run ===
Authentication is required to run Mageia Control Center GUI
Authenticating as: root
Password:
polkit-agent-helper-1: error response to PolicyKit daemon: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed: No session for cookie
==== AUTHENTICATION FAILED ===
Error executing command as another user: Not authorized

This incident has been reported.

Others have this problem and this message but it seems to be linked to that online status thing - which does not apply in my case.

It is clearly a polkit thing though.....

So I decided to go about it Berserk style +1

Code: Select all

urpme polkit

This wants to remove some 400 files including xfce4 - but I don't care :berserkf

Then I logged out and back in to a very basic X environment with two white terminals.
I re-installed polkit

Code: Select all

urpmi polkit

Then I installed xfce4 again:

Code: Select all

urpmi task xfce4

Then I started it in the terminal:

Code: Select all

startxfce4

And the Mageia startup thing appeared and here I could also pick "Install and remove software".
I was nicely prompted for the password and...
:drummer
:drummer
The MCC was there :jackpot

From there I installed lxdm with the Mageia theme for good measure. After a reboot it all works - Mageia is slower than a turtle on pot though - as in takes ages to start

Edit:
I just remembered that I did not use xfce4 ion this Mageia install - only Openbox but it does not matter Drakconf works just fine in Openbox too.
( installed gksu-polkit to make autostarters for Drakconf)

Ah, I had that at very first, but after a couple of reboots it somehow seemed to sort itself?

Yup
The slowlieness is bad though

Code: Select all

[[email protected] ~]$ sudo systemd-analyze blame
         32.610s ntpdate.service
         17.631s shorewall6.service
         10.817s mysqld.service

That ntpdate service is killin me/Mageia

Strange behaviour - I rebooted and checked with the command above.
The I ran:

Code: Select all

sudo systemd-analyze
Bootup is not yet finished. Please try again later.

Aye, that is bad. It's been pretty snappy for me though.

After a while I got this:

Code: Select all

sudo systemd-analyze
Startup finished in 3.069s (kernel) + 3min 4.761s (userspace) = 3min 7.830s

Mageia is booting forever :-D

It is very nice on my mothers hardware but in VB it is not that good.
