Mageia 5

Postby dedanna1029 » 04 Sep 2015, 23:25

I'm about to give it a go from the dvd. I noticed that Linux has really been catching on - and catching up - about the UEFI situation.

There is one feature worth mentioning here. It took a lot of effort and time but it was worth it. Mageia 5 supports UEFI, which means it’s now even easier to install it on recent hardware.

Yes most distros have dealt with it by now. There are still challenges though..

Yes. That's why I think I'll even try this live first, see what happens, then dual-boot, see what happens, and if all is OK on both counts I'll give it a full go. :D

So far, I'm glad I did it that way. I can't get beyond the live dvd on usb - it's not loading the Qualcomm driver(s). I need to load the Windows one - hopefully the kernel will see it then.

You need to turn of that "quick start" thing in the BIOS too since it is Windows specific - to avoid problems with Linux.

This is not going to be a go for me. They are still on the 3.19.x kernel, even with updates, so it won't see my wireless. I used ethernet to get it installed and updated. It still fails to load the Legacy module configuration, which I think is affecting how I'm allowed to get into Windows from grub - or rather, not get into it with grub.

I'm going to dump it, although I like it once I'm in it - at least can tolerate it. It has other annoying things about it, it doesn't find the NVidia in this thing; it wants to use the Intel graphics accelerator solely. So, it's either use the Intel graphics accelerator, or the NVidia, and I have a feeling from the way this is going that the Intel graphics accelerator is safest in this, so have stayed with it.

I'm not in love with Adwaita; it was one of the reasons I dumped Gnome 3, but in XFCE4, Adwaita takes over the whole thing and I can't get down to changing that; I've come to despise gtk3, but know that XFCE needs a gtk theme. This is highly inconvenient for me; XFCE runs like Gnome, and the Window Manager Tweaks proggie isn't working to fix all this on the desktop.

I just... don't like it any more as much as I used to.

So, I will be off to install openSUSE Milestone 2 after some more learning in this over the next couple of days. Then, Arch.

Update: YAYUS!!!!

Houston, we be cookin' with gas on Mageia 5 now!

There are a couple of small niggles to deal with, first being the Mageia polkit and MCC error, but I only had one side of that to deal with, an easy fix. It's not the only niggle, but I'm too tired to think of the others right now. A major niggle was that as in the first link to this post, the Qualcomm Atheros QCA6174 was not supported; I ended up filing a bug report to the Mageia bugzilla, and now it's sorted.

XFCE4 is damn nice; I'll be desktop tuning over the next few days. Time to snag me some wallpapers, get compiz going, all kinds of stuff. :) Play time!

I couldn't get wireless going, and still haven't, but we're close. See Mageia bug #16915, which I've filed.

Apologies, that is an important thing I failed to mention.

How can I ftp into a Mageia mirror, and download all the updates for 5 from Windows?

WS FTP wants a username and password, I've also tried from file manager to ftp the updates folder down, both from here, and they fail when I hit up the X86-64/updates folder, saying I need to log in. It's a public mirror for chrissakes! I've been able to do this before, using various logins; anonymous/guest, guest/anonymous, and other various, anon/anon, etc.
I can get to it via firefox, I'm there now in it. But from there, I have to download the packages one at a time... no way...

I really need to do this; they contain a patch I need.

Apologies, frustrated user here.

Thanks!
