Mandriva was at the station and should have been on the train with the most user-friendly distro of the time.

Sadly the train went on and left Mandriva behind. Today there are lots of user-friendly distros.

Mandriva has kind of lost the exclusivity in the user-friendly department though.

I guess I am not all that exotic - and I left Mandriva for Arch and Manjaro. That could have happened in any case since Mandriva made the entrance to Linux easy for me.
After the learning I Wanted to learn more... and went for Gentoo and Arch.
I sure did not have enough patience for Gentoo and found Arch pretty fantastic after hours and hours of compilation in Gentoo.

Manjaro makes the Arch family complete and offers the fantastic Arch tools without the steep learning curve and sometimes complex manual interventions of Arch.

I think I would have ended there regardless of Mandrivas destiny - Mandrivas market was to get new "greenhorns" to replace me - and that never happened.
Getting new Linux users would make it one of the most important distros -again.

I still do recommend Mageia for newbies so the Mandriva family is still up there and I need to keep up to support those people I recommended it to.
...And I still fill out bug reports in OpenMandriva.

They do live on in Virtualbox here.

I think during the 2nd coming of Mandriva was set on a collision course; that day, when decided to partner with Rosa. Right after, the 2011 version was crap in my opinion.

Still, the best they ever came out was Mandrake 10.x, from there, was pretty much going down.

Anybody remember the XMas edition (red screen with creepy Tuxes) and the 2005 LE.... I wonder why they came out with those weird naming scheme.

Yes 2011 was the one that made me leave since I could not do the online upgrade anymore. I had treated Mandriva as a rolling distro for years with urpmi and that went well...until 2011.

Yes that would have worked better. But I am glad I tried Arch. Today I am pretty much "Archefied" and I have access to the latest and best...
I have been working with systemd for years and now Debian and Centos do follow - so it has its rewards.

As a Desktop I cannot find anything better than Manjaro for GUI people, and Arch for hard core "Linuxers".

As a server I guess I would go for Centos or Debian (I don't think I would go for OpenSuse).

This is sad. Mandriva had the right stuff and should have been a success.

How right you are. I'm necrobumping once again to let you all know that the bankruptcy did indeed do its job this time. I hadn't seen anyone else post about it.

Now, can we please let it go? Completely? Not interject other distros into this as it was all about Mandriva, and not your own distro of choice? It's gone. Leave it in peace.

They are officially out of business. Just run a "Mandriva out of business 2015" search.
