Post Your Public Keys

Postby Snorkasaurus » 05 Jun 2014, 02:00

viking60 made some points in a previous post that made me think that it might be a good idea to have a place where people could share public keys... please allow me to start. :-)

Not for me thanks. It's not something I share publicly - my key or my email address.

Good idea for those who do though.

Well a public key is ....well... public. So that part you can publish.

I understand that, but I really don't want the whole world to see it. I just want the ones I want and need to see it, to see it. That's more what it's for. It is public, yes, but it should be used when it's needed, not passed around like a joint.

Well, I changed my mind, as I will have to write it down somewhere to to a pending install. I downloaded and installed gpg4win and created one with it. It doesn't show anywhere near as long as what Snork has, or probably even viking has.

Code: Select all

Key-ID:  936824D2
Fingerprint:  C492DBB9801FA7ADF35EFC159822D68D936824D2

Somehow that's it? I figured I better do it before I got back to Linux. I'm finishing a lot up with Windows.

If you are using gpg4win then you are probably using Kleopatra as your key management system. In Kleopatra, if you right click your key and select the option "Export Certificates" it will ask you for a file name to save it. I prefer to save it as a .ASC file because old versions of PGP like it that way, but any "plain text" file extension will do. Save the file and open it in a text editor.

You should see a line at the top of the file with dashes... confirm that it says PUBLIC key. That is what you give to people so that they can encrypt data to send to you. Your PRIVATE half and your passphrase are required to decrypt data that is encrypted using this key. If you have XP I would suggest using Clipbook Viewer to help manage your clipboard because Kleopatra doesn't have a built in clipboard editor (and it really should). If you don't have XP you will find that Clipbook Viewer is no longer part of the OS but you will also find that clipbrd.exe from an XP box will work fine (at least it does on my Win7).

PS: I would hesitate to use the numerous available clipboard manager applications you may find to replace clipbrd.exe... in many cases they keep a history of data copied to the clipboard - including decrypted data! If you do decide to use one of these applications, make sure it has a feature for wiping its history.

My 3 cents,
s.

Thanks. I can use that info. This is a first on a public key. I did export the file and save it. It's on the Windows drive. I've just come up with a Mageia install to dual-boot with, and now can't get into Windows because it's hibernating.
Not asking for help with that, it's for another thread, but soon as I can get back to it I'll do as you've suggested here.

Thank you again!

A super dumb question, how you generate your own key? Used them in the past, the certificate was generated by the system and issued on my ID/Smart Card.

Seen some generators online but not so sure who is the Root. Does me no good if big bro has control of the root.

The gpg4win official docs has a pretty good description of how to create both gpg and x.509 certs here.

Yeah, it's pretty good but I'm going to find the link to it again - I've got to find the Linux version.

Another dumb question, will it find my key if I run it from Linux? If I sign into it with the same email address?

Thanks.
