Where is it that you saw they are moving in the next year or two?

Thanks.

Yes it could be longer. I am not sure that the support time means that they will not upgrade Gnome if it gets stable enough
My statement is based on the fact that Gnome 2 will be unsupported and that everyone will have to switch eventually (or fork).
So I guess you are just postponing its death...

Meh. There already is way too little support any more for Gnome 2, and just for that reason, I will always postpone its death, at least on this computer (unless they do gnome 2 again on future versions, which I doubt will ever happen).

I suppose that it depends on what you mean by support. To me it means that updates are provided to fix security vulnerabilities and mission critical bugs. To this extent support for Gnome 2.28 will be provided by Red Hat for the lifetime of RHEL 6. Since Centos is a re-packaged RHEL, it is reasonable to assume that Centos will continue to provide those updates, for the life of Centos 6.

You are probably right. If it will be supported for Redhat it will be supported for Centos.
...And eventually it will disappear unless they go for a fork like Mate or Cinnamon

Not here it won't. lol.
I am debating going to CentOS 6.3 - it's still a Gnome 2 desktop.

Yes as jkerr pointed out; you will have Gnome 2 for many years (before it disappears). In 8 years Gnome 3 might be usable ....

Yes it does not make sense for everyone to contribute to something they do not like.
Gnome has spent a lot of time removing functionality (Like shutting down the computer) due to an arrogant dev attitude that you don't need it.

I do sympathize will all those saying: "I will be the judge of that".

I can understand that dividing all that capacity on several forks will weaken Gnome in general - that is why I don't use it anymore. Openbox is doing just fine here and so is KDE...
