TV + silverlight videos a Linux solution

Postby viking60 » 07 Aug 2011, 13:18

First of all the TV stations that implement Windows technology only, should be boycotted. If needed there is a lot of hassle installing moonlight and plugins and repetitions for every new silverlight version etc etc.
The Idea seems to be that we should give up and use Windows. The Norwegian TV2 has really been bad to the point that one can wonder if they are sponsored by Microsoft. The other main TV broadcaster NRK has managed this without a problem, they simply are more proactive in their approach to new technologies.
I am sure this is the case in many places so I thought I'd share my solution.
Mediaplayerconnectivity plugin you say?
Yes and setting the Windows media to VLC that worked in the old FF and still works in Mandriva 2010.2 etc. But my Arch is bleeding edge and there the plugin does not work anymore so what to do?

I simply installed gecko-mediaplayer
That was it! After all that fiddling with moonlight etc that was all I had to do! :B

So this video now plays fine in Firefox and Iron :dance1
Manjaro 64bit on the main box -Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz and nVidia Corporation GT200b [GeForce GTX 275] (rev a1. + Centos on the server - Arch on the laptop.

Hmmm. Originally, mplayer plugin tries to load that movie in Seamonkey 2.2 but stops at "Stopped".
so,

Code: Select all

[root@localhost rolf]# urpmi gecko-mediaplayer
To satisfy dependencies, the following packages are going to be installed:
   Package                        Version      Release       Arch
(medium "Contrib")
  gecko-mediaplayer              0.9.9.2      1mdv2010.1    x86_64
  gnome-mplayer                  0.9.9.2      2mdv2010.1    x86_64
1.5MB of additional disk space will be used.
334KB of packages will be retrieved.
Proceed with the installation of the 2 packages? (Y/n)

    $MIRRORLIST: media/contrib/release/gecko-mediaplayer-0.9.9.2-1mdv2010.1.x86_64.rpm
    $MIRRORLIST: media/contrib/release/gnome-mplayer-0.9.9.2-2mdv2010.1.x86_64.rpm

There are some files that are named quite similarly to the mplayer-plugin files. I restarted Seamonkey but nothing from gecko-mediaplayer shows up in about:plugins and the behavior with that movie is the same. :confused

I had that classic stop too in mplayer (looked good and just never started). In Mandriva you can install the medaiconnectivity plugin in FF and alter the settings for Media Windows to /usr/bin/VLC.

Sounds good. Unfortunately, I am a die-hard Seamonkey, which won't handle that plugin.

Although I am not keen to mess around with the plugins, I can only think that, maybe, un-installing mplayerplug-in might cause the gecko-mediaplayer plugin files to be used, instead. Too lazy for more :C right now. :P

Hm yes I can see your problem. Seamonkey is not playing along. Whenever you feel the urge you could fix it in FF and use that for watching wrong video formats.
But that would be kind of ignoring my advise of boycott above - so why should you! :-D
In fact why on earth did I suggest a solution for watching Windows only media on broadcasters - when I think you should stay away from them?
Hm Lemme think about that one for a while.....
Edit: I have thougt about it and the answer is: I dunno :confused
Now could any body please tell me my name?

You think that viking because you do what the rest of we geeks do with our classic head up ass syndrome in thinking Linux just HAS to play nice with Windows, so we go to all kinds of lengths to do so. I quit caring ages ago about it, & have no caring about whether I watch the latest that FOX tv has to offer. Neither do I care if a Windows-only product of any kind works or not. It's just not worth it to me. Gecko btw is a no-no on my own machine at any time.
