Microsoft biggest on GitHub open source!

Microsoft is the biggest contributor on Github open source. The Most popular languages are Javascript followed by Java and Python.
Facebook is in second place and Google is in 5th place.

The days where Microsoft were fighting open source with all means are over. The technology has changed so to gain control the new strategy is to make all people use your servers aka "clouds".
Here open source can play a vital role.

In General Open source has become a necessity because the code can be controlled. Recent history has shown that mere "trust us" guarantees are not enough because there have been backdoors and exploited weaknesses in proprietary software or plain cooperation with a government that involves exposing userdata (PRISM).

Microsoft (Joined PRISM in 2007), Yahoo (2008), Google (2009), Facebook (2009), Paltalk (2009), Youtube (2010), AOL (2011), Skype (2011) and Apple (2012) are all companies that are part of the PRISM program.

Officially this program targets "foreigners" but it has also contributed to massive surveillance of US citizens.

To regain credibility it has been important for the companies involved to provide open source programs to avoid surveillance speculations; especially in "foreign" markets.

Microsoft has become the surprising main Open Source contributor.

Whatever which way you look at it Open Source Software thrives.
