The U.S. Department of Justice is asking Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE) to pay $14 billion to settle an investigation into its selling of mortgage-backed securities, Germany's flagship lender said on Friday.
While it is yet to become clear what the final payment will be, if it were to be as high as $14 billion, this would be a severe strain for Deutsche's fragile finances and would likely further rock investor confidence in the bank.

Looks like the US Department wants revenge for the EU tax claims against Apple - money they wanted to claim.
It looks like the US and EU/German trade relations are damaged.
At some point all trade deals between the US and EU were in danger of being called off since the US had been "listening in" on internal EU discussions.
Looks like there is a battle going on with money as the weapon.

Exactly my dear Viking. The world is a business and if you can drive the other bankrupt, the thread is gone and achieve dominance. All without shooting a single shot, no killings, no destruction.

Germany 'prepares Deutsche Bank rescue'
Germany's biggest lender is facing a $14bn (£10.8bn; €12.5bn) bill for mis-selling mortgage-backed bonds before the financial crisis of 2008.
In the worst-case scenario, the government would even take a 25% stake in the bank, according to the article.
Deutsche Bank has denied the report.
In a statement, the German finance ministry stressed: "This report is false. The federal government is preparing no rescue plans. There is no reason for such speculation. The bank has said that clearly."
