WhatsApp Faces Challenging Tension Between Principle And Profit

When Facebook bought WhatsApp in February 2014 for $19 billion, the messaging app was the most popular in the world (with 450 million users) but barely making any money: around $20 million in sales annually, on a yearly subscription that it only charged users in a few countries. After the blockbuster deal, Facebook said that WhatsApp would continue to operate independently, and WhatsApp even put out a blog post, a couple of months later, refuting suggestions that it would undermine its strict principles on privacy because it had sold to a company that made the vast majority of its money from selling ads.

A good application going to hell. Skype was good until MS bought them; now, F Book following M$ steps. Both buying the good communication applications to "slave" you better.

Yesterday WhatsApp announced it was changing its privacy policy, to reflect the fact that it would start sharing the phone numbers of its more-than 1 billion active users, with Facebook.

Users have 30 days from agreeing to the terms to stop Facebook from getting their data, FORBES cyber security writer Thomas Fox-Brewster writes.

Just don't agree to the terms :T

It also shows that you never must accept the "trust us" speech - that can and probably will - be changed further down the road.

Microsoft uses it all the time - When asked about the specifics - they deflect with the "we take everything seriously and can be trusted". That is simply not the case - even if they mean it at some point in time.

Facebook doesn't even pretend to take your privacy seriously (well maybe they have started pretending..)
Manjaro 64bit on the main box -Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz and nVidia Corporation GT200b [GeForce GTX 275] (rev a1. + Centos on the server - Arch on the laptop.
"There are no stupid questions - Only stupid answers!"
