The trend is towards profitable viruses. So the popular thing with crooks these days is to install ransomeware on your computer.
One of the new ones is Chimera. If you are sufficiently stupid it will encrypt your files ans start a program that lets you buy the decryption key to get your data back.
Chimera often is a link to a Dropbox account and it will start the encryption while you are downloading.
To avoid it you simply don't download or click the links in dubious mails.

Interesting take. How do they collect the ransom? That can be tracked, right? That part to me is more intriguing.
Re: Ransomeware virus
Nope, They demand payment via the Tor network - in Bitcoin.

Yep shows in the image at the link.
I'd rather be a free person who fears terrorists, than be a "safe" person who fears the government.

I see... Bitcoin. There is a meme floating around to discredit Bitcoin because is "not" a real currency.
Re: Ransomeware virus
Well you will have a hard time getting by if you base your life on Bitcoin but you can buy some desirable stuff with it.
If you want a burger though.. then good luck to you

I see Bitcoin like an electronic token that is redeemable at participating stores. Do you guys use in Scandinavia car wash tokens? Exchange X amount of currency for a token that can only be used at that store? Video Game Arcades used to use them a lot.
What if, you make a transaction paying someone on those tokens and exchange for cash later at participating stores. Casinos uses their chips as currency and you can "pay" for services and items with them.

It's getting to where you can get pretty much anything with it.

Re: Ransomeware virus
Yop got it!
I only have to buy a plane ticket to London and find the only one there that accepts bitcoin. I hope the Airline takes bitcoin...
... I wanted to write more...but I feel weak...I think I am starving to death...
Yes I think it is a bit like those casino chips. They may or may not be accepted on the premises but not outside.
There are nice things that can be bought for Bitcoins - but it will be hard to survive on them if they cannot provide the daily bread. I mean if you go to a coffee shop and ask if they take Bitcoins they probably will not even know what that is.
But if you want a nice resort in Florida you can actually buy one - with Bitcoins.
