Wireless issue (AGAIN), Mageia 5

Postby dedanna1029 » 15 Mar 2016, 21:15

I've just installed Mageia 5 to an HP 6735b laptop. The wireless on it is a BCM4322 chip. I've tried the ssb driver to no avail, it does not work. So, I tried the broadcom-wl driver, and got the same results. The results, when I try to set up a wireless connection, is "No network interface found for (something? Can't remember this part, I'll post a screenie later) (using ssb driver) or (using wl driver).
The problem is, I can not find the Windows driver for this wireless chip. I can find the Linux one everywhere I go (and have tried it from the HP site, it didn't work), but I need to try with ndiswrapper, see if I can get it going with the Windows driver. Outputs on this:
journalctl -ab is posted here, and lshw:

Any ideas, folks? I need to get the wireless going to update this thing.
If any more outputs are needed, just let me know. Oh, and iwconfig was a disastrous fail.

Thanks!

I guess you are using KDE and you do have a Network manager error around line 55 in the journalctl log in pastebin.

Code: Select all

Mar 14 19:38:04 localhost NetworkManager[733]: (NetworkManager:733): NetworkManager-ifcfg-rh-CRITICAL **: discover_mac_address: assertion 'error != NULL' failed
Mar 14 19:38:04 localhost NetworkManager[733]: <info>  ifcfg-rh: new connection /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ens1 (d18b6429-133f-4947-3b25-4482c7f9d5e7,"System ens1")

This could be a bug and the working workaround is to uninstall pam_kwallet.
It is a keyring error so your router login data are "forgotten".
So try :

Code: Select all

urpme pam_kwallet

...and reboot.
If this is the case entering your router data manually again in Networkmanager should get you up and running too (but you would have to do that on every boot).

Wow, that's funny (strange funny, not haha funny). I'm using XFCE4 but I'll try that anyway, thank you.

I'm sorry, I haven't been able to get back before now. Things got really busy smack after I posted, and still are busy but I *should* be able to try it this weekend. XFCE4 could be using KDE's network manager. I'll check.

It's a fresh install of MGA 5, and this was surprising on a fresh install to me. I thought the Broadcom issues had been straightened out for Linux by now, but this doesn't appear to be Broadcom specific after your post here.

Thanks again, I'll report back soon as I can get going with this for the next time.

Edit: From what they say at the bug, kwalletd is a child process of kdm, and I'm using lightdm. Would that necessarily matter?

I think I'll try first:

"Removing the auth pam_kwallet line from /etc/pam.d/kdm fixes this."

https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16143

It doesn't refer specifically to wireless or network manager but it's worth a try, then move on to your solution if that doesn't work.

I am not sure if it applies for XFCE but it couldn't hurt to try.

True, I'll check it and see.

Just a mention here, I went through this thread, and this is what I don't like to see, and is probably why the person didn't report back. I've had the same problem with the doktor. The split second you don't understand him, he runs you off and gives up. He doesn't seem to understand that he is on a different level from regular users, and needs to drop one or two levels for others to fully understand him.

Yeah that is typical of him - he is a bit rude but knows his stuff.

Yeah, notice he never responded to your last post, P.

Viking, that's just it. He knows HIS stuff, but again translating HIS stuff to a regular user, he's very poor at, so I don't see where knowing HIS stuff is doing much good. He's turned out to be a typical developer in attitude, in that, assuming others know what he's talking about, and if they don't it's FU.
I would post to the Mageia forum on this but am afraid like last time I'd get him.
He copped an attitude with me on the last wireless issue and it turned out I had a legit bug and Thomas didn't even want for the output that doktor did. That's b.s. to me. He can take his tude and shove it.

P., I'll check it out, and had thought of blacklisting, however am so out of practice with things that I wouldn't at this point know what to blacklist or how.

P.S.: If I have to blacklist then I think I have a legit bug again, btw.
The issue could also be in gnome-keyring according to that one thread, so I have some playing around with several things to do. XFCE4 does use Gnome components, so... Who knows.

Yeah This is hardly his motto:

"I am nice - be new"
(saves time not having that as a motto so that might be an explanation).
On the other hand Rhead got it working with another method than the DR ordered .. and that is rude. :-D

@rhead - that command_

Code: Select all

echo "blacklist-wmi" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-mga.conf
simply writes "blacklist-wmi" to a file in /etc/modprobe.d called blacklist-mga.conf.
It adds it to the existing content.
So the interesting thing would be to do a

Code: Select all

cat /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-mga.conf

Somewhere in there you will find "blacklist-wmi" (even if it should have been "blacklist hp_wmi" :-D ) so that seems to work too.

The /etc/modprobe.d directory contains "Kernel stuff".
In this case it seems that you had the wireless showing up twice or listed twice so you needed to blacklist one of them.
https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Setup_wirele ... ic_drivers
(rfkill list shows two times a wireless interface, one is not blocked, and of the other one is only soft-blocked, after rfkill unblock all interface is working)
solution is to blacklist that laptop-specific module as root via echo "blacklist hp-wmi" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-mga.conf

To check how it works you can try something like this:

Code: Select all

echo "berserks rule" >> test.txt

then do a

Code: Select all

cat test.txt
and you will see that it contains "berserks rule".
do

Code: Select all

echo "berserks rule" >> test.txt
again and repeat the cat command and you will see it twice. the ">>" means that you add the content to the file if you use a single > then you will replace it.

@dedanna I do see errors with you Networkmanager in the clips you provided so I discovered that kdm problem. Since you have it with XFCE it is worth exploring.
It might be the Gnome keyring or the policy kit that is playing tricks on you.
I'll try to dig a bit further.....

Are your drivers listed in the link above?
Can I have a:

Code: Select all

lspci | egrep -i --color 'network|ethernet'
or even better a:

Code: Select all

inxi -n
Manjaro 64bit on the main box -Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz and nVidia Corporation GT200b [GeForce GTX 275] (rev a1. + Centos on the server - Arch on the laptop.

I can't install inxi yet, but I'll be doing the other tonight my time, and will report back, thanks. I'll be trying that and several other things.

On the other subject here, I don't understand why he jumps in on threads in the first place if he's just going to run off the user anyway. Go back to developing, doktor. Let someone who can come down off their high horse handle things for once. He does this on almost every thread he jumps in on. There are many. In fact, I'd like to go through the Mageia forum and see just how many threads there are like this. With mine, I had a legit bug and he tried running me off. It's OK, I got him at the end of the thread anyway. Gave thanks to Thomas Backlund lol. Also got him in the second to last post I made there.
