Here is a good video on how to install Linux and dualboot with Windows 8. (Manjaro)

I need to fix the btrfs bug first, then will go from there. I found a bug report on it, but it's old and marked resolved. I'll probably have to file a new one, but want to download and try other updates first.
I reinstalled again after I last posted with full-on reiserfs except for swap, and still get the error.

I downloaded all of the updates from the mirror via Cygwin copied them to a flash stick and configured it for a local source on Mageia 5. I ran the updates. It turned out that rpm needed updating. I have no clue why I didn't think of that. Got the rest installed too,, it went swimmingly. Grub is fine now. It could have been a different update that cured it but that one stands out.
