Back to the UEFI thing again.

Postby dedanna1029 » 01 Oct 2015, 21:18

I just did a nice clean full installation of Mageia 5.
What I've done is taken a 1TB drive, resized the Windows partition to 333GBs, made another partition of 333GBs, and then another 333GB partition for installing Linux distros to.

Well, here's what happens with UEFI (and mine is obviously not supported by Mageia?). I rebooted after the installation as it asked me to, and when the computer started loading again, it came back up to "Missing OS." Then, right after, Microsoft stepped in and decided to do "updates" to "fix" the bootloader. This it does, then back to Windows I go, straight away. So, I shut down, hit the Novo button to be sure all was OK.

I turned off Fast boot in BIOS, set everything to "Legacy First", and set to "Other OS" as well, but now in BIOS the only option I have for the bootloader is Windows' Boot Manager. Clickety-click:

That ^ was taken on my phone camera.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Addendum: This is a twist. Last time I couldn't get into Windows when I did the installation, now I can't get back into Mageia.
Also, I know they recommend at Mageia that we install with UEFI turned on, but then the install disk is blocked straight away here.

I just found this. I'm headed to try it and hopefully say bye-bye to secure boot.

After some trial and error, secure boot is now off, and Mageia is now reinstalling with UEFI on. I'm going to leave this open until I'm sure it will boot in.

Self-solved, never mind. :jackpot

Now, if I could just get the touchpad to work or my usb mouse, things would be great. Trying to work on wireless via kvalo's page but with no mouse or touchpad it's making things a tad difficult.

So, let this be a lesson, find out how to turn off secure boot if you want to dual boot with Linux. :-P

Yeah that is the no 1 in every howto when installing Linux with UEFI. Secure boot is a Microsoft thing.

Yes. I just couldn't find how. It wasn't the same as in the article I posted above.

All is well now, it's dual booting fine with grub2.
