Kopete won't connect
... to anything, no matter what client I'm using.

MSN Messenger, Google Talk (two different accounts), Jabber, Yahoo, you name it pretty much. Each has its own function for me.

I am on a network at work that is pretty anal.
None of those service would work; the routers has specific instructions on what ports to forward packets.
