Windows is still on my netbook!

Postby dedanna1029 » 22 Apr 2012, 19:01

I don't know if it's that I didn't choose for Mint to take over the bootloader without realizing it or what, but at the grub screen, I still have had a "Windows Loader on sha(something)" entry, so when booting just a few minutes ago, I clicked it up to see if it was something that didn't get erased from the screen during installation, or what.
Yeah, you guessed it. Windows tried to boot, then went into "repairing files", without letting me cancel it. At the end of it, it couldn't repair them because <the files weren't there that it needed?>. I did a ctrl+alt+delete and got to Linux Mint, but it's disconcerting to know that after the hassle I had of trying to get rid of it, and get Linux installed, it's still there.

How do I find out if it might have been that I didn't install the boot loader to the MBR, or something else? Even more importantly, when I find out what the issue is that still presents Windows, is there a way to get rid of it without having to reinstall again? There is also an entry for "Previous Linux Versions", from when I over-wrote Fedora 16 possibly?

If you need to see any other code or files to see what's wrong here, let me know. I'm not good with grub.

Thanks.

Hmm this is out of my range. I do not get the lack of menu.lst.
But you can take a (Mandriva) free live CD and fix the bootloader (it is a menu entry there). I have done it before - it works (maybe). I am sure our Guru can elaborate...
Have a look here - The Guru has spoken +1
Manjaro 64bit on the main box -Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz and nVidia Corporation GT200b [GeForce GTX 275] (rev a1. + Centos on the server - Arch on the laptop.

Yeah, just so most know, most debian distros don't use menu.lst - they use grub.cfg.

Oh boy. Yeah, I remembered that, but it's still not telling me how to find - and get rid of - whatever teeny partition windows is on, and if I can delete it, or extend /home to use it, or what?

It looks like you still have the restore partition, it will fail trying to read whatever filesystem you have mint on.
Past experience demonstrates best method to tighten bolts is to use appropriate size spanners.

Ah, OK, thank you.

I did opt to keep the restore partition - just couldn't tell that's what that was.

Thanks. :)
