Yes in KDE I pick the kwin window manager in fusion-icon (I can only do that because fusion-icon is already started/loaded ). No need for compiz there. In general I think you are right about compiz and the video issues. If it does not work I see no reason to use it. I can also turn of compiz and replace it with metacity, before I log out there.
That will most likely also take care of the trouble.
But you are right. Because if I forget to turn of compiz before a reboot, my Thosiba Equium will just go in to a hibernating state - or something - it does not boot back in again.
It will only do that after replacing compiz with metacity; after a right-click on the fusion-icon.

So you see it is a brilliant idea to autostart fusion-icon (that does not necessarily autostart compiz).
And yes it is a good idea to turn of compiz there before you log out - I have experienced that too.

Yes, but if you have a script to auto-start effects on boot like you said previously, then that's not a good thing. You've defeated the point of auto-starting fusion-icon in your desktop session properties. That was my point.
