Tor setting help?

Postby dedanna1029 » 02 Apr 2011, 03:24

After a tip from the Boss here that connecting to the forum through a proxy might be the issue I was having with this forum logging me out continually, almost every post I was making in Arch Linux ( +1 I was using Tor, and the Iron browser), I tried through Tor from Fedora on the Chrome browser, and never got logged out in 3 days of use on Fedora 14.

I am wondering if anyone knows what settings I could look for that would be making Iron log me out continually (literally out of the middle of nowhere, sometimes 5-6 times in one forum session, and I'm not in here long) when using Iron on Tor in Arch. This is the only site that it does this at.

Thanks.

In a sense Tor and Iron give you ecactly what you want- anonymous surfing! And then you start complaining about it
Can't you put http://bjoernvold.com in the exeption list under proxy settings?
Edit:
I just activated Tor in FF and surfed here. While writing my epic story - the best one ever - I was logged out and when I logged in it was gone :f I think I can fix this with the saving password under preferences->Security or create a master password. (But this behavior is in fact what I want Tor to do, so this is all about an exception)
I belive there is a bug in Iron that regards the ability to remember - I am not able to set it as my default browser.
Anyway: One of the features of Tor is to not remember passwords - you can turn that off. (And be unsafe again)

How did you set up Tor in Iron?
Manjaro 64bit on the main box -Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz and nVidia Corporation GT200b [GeForce GTX 275] (rev a1. + Centos on the server - Arch on the laptop.

Right, I don't want it to remember my password, but I don't need it logging me out of here every 15 seconds, either. I'm wondering if there is something up with Iron and phpbb sites maybe? I was able to set it as default browser, btw. Screenshots in a few.

Tor settings in Iron are the same as they always were, on every version of Iron I've used since I started using Tor (there's a thread where we discussed Tor in general, stating settings there as well):

Try adding http://bjoernvold.com in the no proxy for field at the bottom (use ";" to separate). That should take care of the problem.
Edit:
I Just tested it and it does not - Checking further. meanwhile you might want to set http and https to 127.0.0.1 port 8118. That way you get the same settings as the Torbutton install in FF.
As you know you can always use http://bjoernvold.com to check your IP - It is on the menu bar to the right.

Okay, got that in and reloaded Iron - am going to cruise the forum for a bit. Will report back.

Edit: Nope, it's still doing it. I'm going to retry previous version of Iron and see what happens now that it's been on this one.

Am trying with 7.0.520.0 - will keep with it for a couple of days. It doesn't like the profile 'cause it said it comes from a new version of Iron, and to upgrade, but it's still going, and not something I really care about.

You could set the proxy switch button to direct connection while you are here. Not ellegant but it works. This is not Browser specific. It happens in both Iron and FF if you have activated Tor.
Basically Tor is doing its Job and that means that this forum should not remember or store data about you. So you are logged out fairly quickly.
You cannot be a catholic priest and a condom user at the same time
So I am looking for a setting to make the forum an exception to the proxy.

That's what I ended up doing in the end, but the problem still remained curious in my mind.

BTW, old version of Iron didn't help - I'm still logging out like a yo-yo. :(

Question, why isn't it doing this on other types of sites? I can go to my email and never be logged out, I can get on FB and never get logged out. Strange, this.

I don't think that is the question. The question is why would you want to use Tor if a site can keep your data for 3 days? Anyway I will have a look, and test against other forums.
Edit:
I tested it at Mandriva and I get logged out after some minutes there too. I have changed some settings so it might take a bit longer.
To avoid the logout altogether you must set bjoernvold.com in the No Proxy for field ";" separated.
As we have tested this does not work in your Iron switchy addon. And this is a known bug that is already fixed so it will work any day now :-D
http://code.google.com/p/switchy/issues/detail?id=92
Going to test in in FF now.....
Yes! It works:
Go to Edit->Preferences->Advanced
And click on the Settings button next too Connection
add bjoernvold.com and any other site you trust separated by commas ","
like this:

Code: Select all

127.0.0.1, 10.0.0.1/24, bjoernvold.com

Image

In FF4 you need to edit the (alpha) addon and switch to manual proxy settings and add bjoernvold.com at the bottom.

Okay, thanks so much! Wow, you must've run an exact search for it that made that bug pop up - I couldn't find one.

I want to be able to use it here too, as when I'm in Iron, I'm normally logged into several sites at once. If I switch to direct connection here, that means I'm switch to direct connection everywhere I am at the time. I don't mind being in direct connection here at the forum, as I know for a fact you're privacy conscious, but the other sites I'm logged into may not be.

Anyway, I'm commenting on that bug. It's been almost a year since they said there would be a fix, and obviously they haven't provided one.

As a matter of fact, when one looks here, one can find all kinds of bugs that are similar in nature on it.
