Open Source Online Game Gets Students Excited About Linux

Postby dedanna1029 » 17 Sep 2015, 18:24

When Razvan Rughinis began teaching the introductory operating systems course at University Politehnica of Bucharest in Romania 10 years ago, he was challenged to get students interested in Linux and keep them interested for the entire three-month course.

Many first-year computer science students have no experience with Linux, and they have no interest in learning it, said Rughinis a professor in the Computer Science and Engineering Department. And those students who do know Linux are regarded as unusual and treated as social outcasts, he said.

“They wouldn't pay attention to the first experience to see what Linux has to offer; not just the desktop, but how the services work and the depth of the system,” he said. “It's a steep learning curve for students coming from high school. Their first encounter was too difficult.”

To help his students get interested in and engaged with Linux, Rughinis created World of USO, an open source, interactive online game that teaches the basics of the operating system at the same time it encourages participation and competition. He's now run the game the last eight years, with great results.

Seems to me this teacher is very imaginative, and knows how to get the Linux community going, with converts to Linux! :)
He certainly is getting the message out that Linux is cool. :)

Good idea :s
For me it is easier. I simply use Linux because it is the best +1 I would not hesitate to switch to Windows if it could compete; and in my book - it can't.

But you need to know that Linux exists and what it can do to get there so this teacher found a clever way.

Agreed.

I'd like to meet up with this guy sometime. When I was going to go into teaching, I was also going to try to get something instituted worldwide (there are those who say it can't be done though), that is to get every college worldwide to make it mandatory for every IT, programming, computer science, etc. student to have a full course on Linux and other OSes to graduate. That way, Linux would be promoted to the status it should be up to, and the students would know when they get out of college that they have something that is so needed in this world - choice. They could come out and specialise in whatever they want; M$, Linux, Mac, literally anything they want to do, and run whatever they want to on their own personal computers. The decision would be in their hands, not in some corporate bigwig's hands.

People can make serious money when they're well-rounded in education like that, and I'd still, someday, love to see it happen. Teachers like the one in the OP - they're a great start!

Linux is big at the Universities. Check out where the repos are hosted and you will find lots of Universities. So you will find it at the highest level. This makes Linux appear even "harder to get" and "complicated".

That is sad since Linux is easy; easier than Windows IMHO. The difference is that you will have to install Linux and that will exclude most people.

If everybody would have to install Windows on their default Linux computers then Windows would be the marginal system. Microsoft are well aware of this and that is why every OEM is roughly guided to deliver computers with Windows.

In Italy the customers can demand another OS and get their money back for the default Windows installation :B The computer and the OS have to be offered separately.
That makes it very important (for MS) to make it hard to impossible to install anything else than Windows on the hardware though...

What I see is, MS comes as default in the US, so people does not know any better. Another is Applications/Software support. For example, CATIA V5 is only MS based. If you want to use the software you are forced to use MS only. Another is Office but might loose ground with the cloud crap. Unless is turned into a Netflix that works on Android but not on Linux; go figure that one.

But see, people don't need the cloud crap with an Office suite. If they are educated to know these things then they would probably find it better than the crap Windows gives them. There's a lot they don't need, and probably don't really want, either.

LibreOffice is perfectly fine for an office suite. I used it in college. Refused to use Windows for anything, including my C+ course.

Absolutely, I do too use Open and Libre Office.

The ones I have seen people using lately is Google Drive (Docs) and are finding out that MS Office is not really need it.

I've seen the same. However, I don't like Google Docs much - it's a cloud thing too.
