Which Antivirus Do You Use for Your Computer and Why?

Postby Umairee95 » 21 Dec 2017, 20:15

I have tested and tried quite a few and concluded that only Avira and Avast's free solutions are worth trying. They both offer comprehensive protection and several extra utility tools too.

Avira and Avast are two good and free alternatives. Avira is the better choice because Avast has a somewhat tiresome register routine.
I use our Viking Rescue DVD and there you have the choice of several free AV's including Avast (which is the only one that requires a registration there).
You can find them In Trinity Rescue Kit.
It fetches the free trials every time so they will never expire.

When scanning for viruses it makes much sense to scan offline so scanning from a rescue DVD or from a Linux dual boot makes a lot of sense.
Scanning from inside an infected Windows will not let you remove the virus in most cases,

For this I mainly use Clamscan; but I may also use F-prot or some of the others on the RescueDVD.

When I scan Windows from a Linux dual boot I use Clamscan....because it is open source.

I use Linux... why I need such thing. The only Windows in the household are the ones that came with the house.

Atm the biggest viruses seem to be the official Windows updates. I cannot log in to Windows 10 after the last update :berserk2
I could spend the time to fix it but I'll wait until a day were I am really bored.
I might remove Windows 10 altogether and use the space for Linux since I do not need Windows for anything... we'll see.

Windows is still used by a few people out there so I might keep it just to help out a bit when it fubars.

In fact I think I will scan my Windows Documents and settings from Linux now:
:A

Code: Select all

clamscan -r -i /run/media/viking/Windows/'Documents and Settings'/

And it seems to be good:

I prefer Avast. It not only offers comprehensive protection and performance but also exerts a very little impact on the system when you compare it to other alternatives like Avira.

yes Avast has the highest detection rates in many tests so it might well be the best option for Windows.

I used to love Norton as it comes pre installed with the system but then it used to show annoying pop-ups so i switched to Avira. Agree with Umairee95 the two software's are closely similar unless you compare Avira vs Avast closely against their specs. To me Avira is light and easy to use..

Avast, and I even paid for it so my mom could use it too. It's become quite heavy, however, so I stopped using it for anything - her old computer can't even run it any more.
Now, it's back to punt, pass, and kick. I only run android on my devices (except my laptop, which is Linux), so have no use for an AV any more.

So, can those in the states still get Kaspersky? I was reading that the US banned it.
