You will have to pay for Win10 upgrades

Postby viking60 » 24 Jul 2016, 19:47

So far it has bee free to upgrade Win 7 and 8 to Windows 10.

This offer expires 29.7 - 2016 after which you will have to pay for the upgrade.

Windows 10 has had its fair share of trouble so this expiring "offer" is not regarded all that positive by all. Windows 10 goes to the cloud and it will stay there. This might reduce the control you have over your computer compared to prior Windows installs.

Microsoft might hope for a "hurry and upgrade before it is to late" effect. IMO you will do better with Windows 7.

The price for an upgrade will be about $100 after 29.7

I can say that 10 is way better than 8, at least is much easier to find what you need. What I found interesting that are some similarities to KDE. For example, multiple desktops is one that comes to mind.

Yes you can have that on other Windows too with a small download. Microsoft loves Linux so they copy the best parts.
The problem I have with it is that it is harder to tell where your computer ends and Microsoft's server begins. The telemetry stuff may be good for services but not for privacy.

Here is what Microsoft had to say about it on my inquiry:
Windows is an operating system, which is a software program that supports basic functions like managing your files and running apps, and uses peripherals like your printer, monitor, keyboard and mouse. In the past, Windows could be thought of as software existing only on your device. Now with Windows 10, important parts of Windows are based in the cloud, interacting with online services.

Yes it has been ages since I Logged into Windows. That must mean that Linux copes with all the tasks better...or else I'd be using Windows.

The deadline has come so now you should have to pay for Windows 10 - right?

Wrong!

You can simply update by setting the date back in Windows 7 and 8 to before 29 July and simply upgrade.

Of course Microsoft knows about this - and hope that as many as possible will do just that. Windows is control and Microsoft wants that.

I think is a move based on scarecity. Just the simple fact that you will not get for free and able to cheat the system, might force and/or make up the minds of the ones left.
