The Mysql database that Oracle bought from Sun has a nasty vulnerability that can be exploited to allow crooks to execute arbitrary code with root privileges when the MySQL service is restarted.

Oracle has not yet come up with a patch for this weakness in MySql, but the MariaDB fork is already patched for this vulnerability that goes under the name of CVE-2016-6662.

Most fora in the internet like this one use Mysql or MariaDB. Since MariaDB is compatible with Mysql it looks like a good idea to change from Mysql to MariaDB.
