Something that I had totally missed. Red Hat is now actively involved in the CentOS project:

I think this is an important signal to send since Debian has been preferred over Centos on several (important) occasions.
With contributions from RedHat directly that should make Centos even more solid.

I see that the "cloud" is the future in this strategy - centralizing our data with "trusted" servers is not that smart (One big cloud in the NSA server center to rule them all).

All the data in the world gathered on a few servers - what a wet dream - for the GCHQ and the NSA.

But Centos will become even better - it is a perfectly fine desktop already. And it is one of the boxes that is easily remotely updated with Salt
Only the "Big" ones pass that test.
Debian, Centos and Arch but not Manjaro (Arch based) or SolydXk (Debian based) do package upgrades.

So yes; Centos is up there and will probably work even better now - that is good news.

As it is; I have to start the network manually after a reboot on the odd occasion...

I decided to give CentOS 7 a trial run. During and after installation it reported that no network device could be found. After making sure that my bog-standard device was in fact still working (on other installs) and a lot of messing around, I discovered that Red Hat in their wisdom had decided to drop the forcedeth driver.

Fortunately, I'm not the only one who needs it and one was available in elrepo. After installing the rpm and re-booting, the network was configured automatically.

Apparently, the third party repo's are not all fully updated for RHEL 7 and so yumex is not yet installable (missing dependencies).

I'll wait a couple more weeks before doing any more testing.
