Moondrake GNU/Linux 2014 1/2 Beta 3

Postby proyvind » 25 Jun 2014, 15:01

I finally got around to prepare a new iso..
Lot of distracting factors and what not has made things way more late than anticipated, and it's just not as polished as I'd planned for it to be as I've all along have had to waste a lot of time by tracking and staying current with others due to rather sporadic activity on my part, so just getting something that properly installs and seemingly works ended up being main purpose of this release..
But on the positive side, all the traditional mandriva tools have been actively maintained and developed, while also tracking all of changes from Mageia, rather than the outdated versions that OMV is shipping that barely has been touched since the project got hijacked...
Otherwise there's quite a lot of wastly improved packages, packages that's missing from omv2014, packages with bug fixes not in omv2014 etcetcetc.

In general, this should provide a quite enhanced release of what OMV released, with relatively few regressions (there's bound to be some stuff, especially related to the tools I've been maintaining as I've simply haven't had the chance to properly test all of myself, nor had the time for any final polish, which very much relates to why this is beta 3 and not RC1;).

I have some few remaining features from the original Mandriva Linux 2012 technical specs that there's some final work left on either finishing up or just simply integrating, then there will be some remaining work on branding/theming/artwork/+++ left to put the final touch on it (anyone who feels like helping out, ie. with some plymouth theme or whatever, please do:).

Worth pointing out is that this release is fully compatible with omv2014.0, for which you can use the same repositories for (so you don
t have to worry about running an abandoned distro, it'll be supported by omv2014.0 for everything from repos regardless of whether I'd give up on stuff or not, it also means that while I label this release as beta 3, omv2014.0 is considered stable/final/official, so you really shouldn't fear this as being "only" a beta release), while the moondrake packages are found in a separate repository at http://abf-downloads.rosalinux.ru/mdk_p ... iva2014.0/ , which you'll need to manually add this time, while for next release it'll be already added by default..

I won't bother going in detail about all news and changes, since as time has passed by for some time, the list would be too long for me to bother documenting nor recalling...

Next release isos I put out should definitely not be as insanely late as this one ended up becoming...

Enjoy!

The photos are surely nice, but they won't really match the theme for this release unfortunately..

Key words for the theme are humouristic, cute penguins, (Mandrake) nostalgia etc., as you might've already picked up on. ;)

Yes I noticed :-D
Looks like the DVD iso is a bit fubared though:
:A

Going for the CD iso....
No that one would not start at all - re-partitioning the current ReactOS FAT disk with SolydX....

Yes, I just discovered myself...
I hadn't tested the i586 isos, and the path to where the initramfs, kernel etc. were to be found was hardcoded in the iso generator script, so only the 64 bit isos generated was working properly...

I've just reuploaded newly regenerated & fixed iso of i586 cd iso, with upload of i586 dvd currently in progress..

Got it the CD iso works. I'll install it and write up my findings...
So far I have discovered that the partitioning gives an error if I choose to "delete all and use the entire disk" on that blue bar.

Here is the error:

So I used the existing partitions that I had created with SolydX and from there I could move on to place / and /home....

The install fails on the formatting bit regardless of what alternatives I use :confused
Do you have the 64 bit iso's somewhere? (While I check my VB settings and try again...)

Yeah the drunk Mandrake Penguin - we all recognize him :-D
Going for the CLI install now since GUI failed....

The formating does not happen so it stops there.

The 64 bit isos can be found at the same place as the 32 bit isos.

I haven't really tested the 32 bit isos at all myself to be honest, but I guess I should try run through an install with them at least rather than just making false assumptions of it to be working at same places as the 64 bit does....

seems like the uclibc build of libuuid.so.1 that these formatting tools are linked against are busted...

will have it fixed and push yet another (then tested) iso.. ;)
