Canonical owns the trademark Ubuntu together with the logos. Now they are using the ownership to deny critical websites the use of the word Ubuntu and of the use of Ubuntu logos. Micah.f.Lee runs a site that is called fixubuntu.com where he gives tips about shuting down the critisized automatic online search etc. - He simply makes people aware of Ubuntus privacy issues. Since http://fixubuntu.com contains the ubuntu name this would pretty much mean that the site has to shut down.

So to explain this further - this is a completely accepted review:

Ubuntu means "human kindness" (roughly) and reflects the Ubuntu distro with it's helpful community and superior OS. Ubuntu just works - and will solve all your problems.
Ubuntu is easy to use on Phones PC's and servers....

This on the other hand will have to look like this now:

Blip never works and is a threat to your privacy. Blip is also against the Linux developments if it is not developed by blip. Blip has refused to implement systemd and blips Blip DE sucks.

This probably only applies in the US - it is hard to imagine that others would allow patents on parts of a language.

We can probably look forward to a lot of positive Ubuntu reviews now - the negative ones would be about - Blip.

Micah has produced a disclaimer to calm down Canonicals fears about us thinking that his site is associated with Ubuntu:

Yup that looks pretty clear to me - i don't think Canonical has to fear any association anymore....

But the name will have to be changed because Canonical will claim that the name itself generates traffic to his site as a result of their marketing. They will not spend millions on promoting counter productive sites.

So let's help him with a new name : How about fixthecrap.com? Fighting privacy invading is a noble cause that deserves support. So we have criticised Ubuntus privacy invading too

Last week, the less-than-a-month-at-Canonical new guy sent out the toughest template letter to the folks behind a “sucks” site. Now, that was not a decision based on policy or guidance; as I said, Canonical’s trademark policy is unusually generous relative to corporate norms in explicitly allowing for this sort of usage. It was a mistake, and there is no question that the various people in the line of responsibility know and agree that it was a mistake. It was no different, however, than a bug in a line of code, which I think most developers would agree happens to the best of us. It just happened to be, in that analogy, a zero-day remote root bug.

Paste it into your Ubuntu Terminal press enter and type your password.

Your privacy should now be restored and thus Ubuntu should not suck anymore, What really sucks though is that Canonical did not ask up front if you would be willing to offer your privacy to help financing the free Ubuntu. They simply assumed you would be willing to - and they still do. The spying functions are activated by default on all versions above 12.10.
