Nvidia seeks peace with Linux

After having been heavily criticized by Linus Torvalds Nvidia is now seeking peace with Linux.
They see that Linux has gained importance for them after Valve has announced that they will be going for Linux.
This move is generally regarded as positive in the Linux community but Linus Torvalds is not quite ready to apologize for his finger -yet:

Torvalds has responded to Ars, saying he's optimistic but not quite ready to apologize to Nvidia. "We'll see," Torvalds wrote in an e-mail. "I'm cautiously optimistic that this is a real shift in how Nvidia perceives Linux. The actual docs released so far are fairly limited, and in themselves they wouldn't be a big thing, but if Nvidia really does follow up and start opening up more, that would certainly be great.

They've already been much better in the ARM SoC space than they were on the more traditional GPU side, and I really hope that some day I can just apologize for ever giving them the finger.

I read this aswell, maybe it will get even better on the linux platform from now on :)
Nvidia is already the best GPU for linux, thanks to their closed drivers. AMD/ATI sucks thanks to crappy drivers, intel has no power but offers open source drivers (doesn't help when the hardware is crap)
It sucks that they need to keep the source closed, but at least it works.
Thumbs up for new cooperation from nVidias side :)

I don't think Torvalds should apologize. He gave them what they deserved at the time.

It's about time this could mean big things for the gnu/linux community. :A

Well so much for that peace. I have a perfectly well functioning NVIDIA GT200 [GeForce GTX 280] that needs the Nvidia340xx driver.
And now they stopped supporting it for Linux.
Yes it can be built manually but will only work up to kernel 5.4 So thank you for that Nvidia..again.

I decided to drop the driver all together and go back to good old nouevau and using xorg.conf.

I had a black (non graphical) screen for some days complaining about inability to start LightDM but I finally figured out what to remove from the Old Nvidia config (I removed all the "apps" with pacman).

This is not as easy as it sounds and takes some research - thanks again NVIDIA :berserkf

Open source is the most reliable way to go.

NVidia was for me the Go-To GVA; always worked, gave me no fuzz. I am not a gamer, so my demands are simple, no need for the latest and greates GVA.

Let the market decide, either move with it or die.

Well yes but that market thing is complex. Linux is developed by everybody and Windows by the few. Clearly Linux is more sophisticated.
Supercomputers tell us so....

I am the market and I am not happy with my Nvidia Geforce GTX not working anymore on Linux.

Well it still works on Ubuntu and I could compile the driver but it will not work above kernel 5.4. So the market thing would be to go for Windows then..and I just don't like it.

The Nvidia card has worked fine without problems; until the drivers were discontinued.

And to be honest it works fine with nouveau if you are not a gamer (I am not) but it still is impossible to utilize the card to its full potential and that is no good PR for Nvidia.

Luckily B1o had one newer card lying around so after having struggled to finally getting nouveau to work with the old card - I switched to a newer card - Nvidia GeForce GTX 680 - and installed the Nvidia drivers again.

So that works just fine...until Nvidia decides to discontinue the drivers

Sucks.... I might have to download an older Linux version to keep my system working.

I so love it when he does that. :lolup

So, even Arch is ticked off about the situation. Arch Linux - News: nvidia 455.28 is incompatible with linux >= 5.9 I wonder how many others are ticked off about it?

The thing is, none of them are anywhere near as ticked about RealTek wireless drivers, which are equally as common. Nvidia is only one of the many things wrong in the "open source" world. Back years ago, both R_Head and I warned the Linux community right out in the open there on the Mandriva forum, that devels have got to start writing for Linux, instead of waiting around for Microcrap to write the drivers for them. No one is going to do it for them. They need to get that imagination going, get these things written, do what they're paid to, or M$ will definitely take over Linux. They've damn near done it now, and we may be sitting here this time next year eating those words. Linux devels need to get up off their arses, say "Screw Microsoft," and get a move on.

The sad thing? It won't be long before you can't.

As anything in this planet, everybody has a price. That is how we got corrupted politicians, corrupted corporations, corrupted government.

What comes to mind is Skype. Started as a nice Open Source application, after a spat with M$, they paid a lot for it but now is owned by them. What about Google? Started as a nice Open Source Search Engine and now, owned by a 3 letter agency. All is about cash and the people's abilities to say no; most people have no will to say no.

We see that now days with the Vaxxx. Is becoming one of those, take the shot or lose your job. My pushback comes from misstrust, why insisting so much, why bribing us?

Sorry for going on a tangent, but Open Source will be lost if people start to say yes to the Dark Side of the Force.

They already have, and that is the problem. Linux/Open source is now so deep in bed with Microsh!t, that I'm seriously betting they won't get back out. This means not only is Nvidia in trouble with the Linux community, but so will other computing manufacturers be.
Wait for manufacturers to write their drivers for Windows indeed. That very thing is what will kill Linux.
I understand they have written crap drivers for the Realtek wireless. I also have read a lot that they are crap drivers that crash a lot, so they certainly aren't working drivers, for sure. Thomas's drivers, too.
I thought Linux was chalk full of coders? Guess not.
