This paper reports on the findings of that survey, with a focus on the 428 respondents who work for organizations with sales of more than $500 million or 500+ employees. The number of respondents from the largest enterprises in the world grew by more than 10% this year, giving us an even better picture of enterprise Linux adoption trends.
The trend is clear:
80 % of the people asked had implemented a Linux server in the last year and want to continue to do so. Only 5% stated that they planed to implement Windows servers in the future.
75% saw "Big Data" as the biggest challenge in the IT area. and 72% wanted to handle that challenge with Linux. Only 36% wanted to meet that challenge with Windows.
The study shows that the most important reason for choosing Linux are the low costs and technical features like security.
Now it gets interesting:
40 % of the people asked regarded the attitude of the management as the biggest obstacle for implementing Linux, while 28% had no obstacles at all for implementing Linux.
Rumor has it that the Management was asked to comment on this, but that was not possible since they were on a Microsoft charity event in the Bahamas at the time...
