OpenSuse 12.1 is out

Postby viking60 » 17 Nov 2011, 00:35

ImageOpenSuse 12.1 is released:
It is November 16, 2011 and our mirrors have synced. Time to present to you: openSUSE 12.1! This release represents more than eight months of work by our international community and brings you the best Free Software has to offer. Awesome improvements include the latest GNOME 3.2 desktop as well as the newest from KDE, XFCE and LXDE; your ownCloud made easy with mirall; Snapper-shots of your file system; and much, much more.

Yes it is out and it looks interesting as always, It comes with Gnome 3.2 and apparently they are the first do do a color thing with it.
KDE comes with Apper and they are proud of that.

I always test OpenSuse because it looks good and I always seem to fall on my nose. The last time I just gave up, over that repo chaos. The repos should be improved now so I guess I will try again -maybe.

And I seem to be using the logo improperly here - but that is the one I found.
..Come to think of it; Suse is using money improperly by paying license fees to Microsoft....
So I guess we are even.
Suse was my first Linux back in the stone ages, and they had a fairly decent live CD before anybody else. In the later years they have launched ambitious projects, which they were unable to complete. Like Click'n install repos - good idea... and it never worked. My experience and I think OpenSuse has been buggy lately.
Webpin did not work in 11.4 and I have heard rumors that it still doesn't. That tool for finding software is important given the repo chaos at OpenSuse.
The last time I wanted to check out tumbleweed I got this user friendly message:

Ok as the observant reader might have discovered I was somewhat annoyed about not being able to upgrade my old OpenSuse installation.
So I downloaded the 12.1 Gnome CD to make a fresh install.
The installer looks good and it offers me options and lets me pick. Like putting home on a separate partition and the choice of Btrfs! Naturally I picked it since it is new and should make Linux more able to handle space.
After a reboot it autoconfigures and pops right into gnome.
VB Guest additions are working and I can resize the screen as I want. Good stuff so far :s
I will now start using it and report under Distrotalk.
