I guess it depends on your needs.

If you are security minded you will pick none of them and pick Seafile instead. It keeps the encryption on the Client side where Owncloud keeps it on the server.

Then again the notion that anything is safe in the Cloud is a misconception so even a safe cloud is not suitable for your most private data.

Owncloud is more widespread than Nextcloud so that could well be the best reason for choosing it. The Apps are there and it is fairly functional.

As an enterprise solution none of them will do since they cannot provide the stability and predictability that corporate needs due to the split up.

Obviously OC and NC are similar so it won't matter what you pick - they are almost identical at this point.

With Owncloud 9 (that I use); you can access both for the next 18 months.

At that point you may have to choose and who knows what nextcloud will look like by then?

Conclusion:
Owncloud has been around longer so more third parties have made apps for it longer.
You will have no problem with clients on your smartphones and computers and they will work better. The most important feature of a "cloud" is to get easy access and syncing from everything everywhere.
(Yes me and a few other security geezers will point out the risks and tell you about the road to Hell that is paved with functionality and good intentions, but lets face it - nobody is listening to us if the stuff works well)
Owncloud is most likely to provide that.

Would be nice to have an easy Cloud Server setup and place it at your home. I used to have a FTP server and worked beautiful. I might have to start doing it again.

Well it was not all that easy with Centos with SeLinux activated etc but that is needed to make it secure.
I have also added apps for editing documents directly and play music directly - the calendar is nice too.

Feel free to check it out:

I'll send you the id and password per PM

I think it would be doable to make it work on Mageia too.

I have downloaded the Cirrus client for Android it is free and syncs well- The linux desktop client is called owncloud-client.
