Or you could try this in gsettings:

Code: Select all

 GSETTINGS_BACKEND=dconf gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.sound event-sounds true

One thing that really annoyed me was the lack of option for setting startup programs like Guake terminal and Gkrellm. To find that menu I had to hit <ALT>+ F2 and enter gnome-session-properties
Why did the Gnome people hide that so well? I have added it to my favorites. I think I know why it is removed: It is for the same reason they do not have the "Power Off" as a default. The Gnomers wanted every box to hibernate and thus the running programs would be remembered. +1
Also the gnome-shell was updated today so I guess the first bugs are taken care of.
Hm I have to admit... This thing is growing on me :P

Could try it I guess, but it's a direct libnotify issue. :\

Also, check this out - found what's freezing up KDE once it's fully loaded in Arch (remember that?) - it's pulseaudio, and phonon is set for the backend for it. :(

So, I can't even change out fusion-icon in it. :(

They screwed something up big time since that pulseaudio/libnotify/notification-daemon update. Not sure what, but something. What's really strange, is I can run KDE programs in Gnome (without sound notification working), but the second I log into KDE and let it fully load, to freezing hard we will go (except for the mouse).

I *may* try reinstalling pulseaudio, not sure. In fact, think I'll go do that now...

Re: Gnome 3 compared to KDE4.6

Postby viking60 » 06 May 2011, 12:55

So after some testing I have compared with KDE 4.6.
Search function with indexing:
They both have it and they both work very well - a upper hand for Gnome 3 here.
Because you do not have to be in the search field to make it work-you just start writing. And you can expand your search to Google and Wikipedia with a klick (you do not even have to open your browser)- Gnome 3 is saving us from a lot of clicks here.
Gnome3:
Image
KDE4.6:
Image

The famous side by side Window heavily marketed from Gnome and Win7 :)
They both have it and even if Gnome has been marketing this as a new feature KDE4.6 is better here!

Switching of workspace.
Totally different concepts I think Gnome3 can be the most efficient one with some training. Gnome3 has some key combos that makes life easy and fast. But out of the box KDE4.6 is the easiest one to understand.
It is a draw.
Menu structure
Different concepts again. While KDE4.6 has a lot of flexibility here and lets you set up menu layouts Gnome 3 has decided what is good for you.
In KDE I have the text menus where I can pick my programs. In Gnome 3 you have the categories and the rest is all about icons all over the screen.
Out of the box Gnome3 is easier to understand for a newbie, but you can have the same in KDE if you choose to set it up like that.
I kind of miss the good ol' text menus so a slight upper hand for KDE4.6 here.
Stability
For the first time in history KDE4.6 has a slight upper hand. There are some bugs that will be fixed in Gnome 3. and when you know what to avoid it is quite stable.
But too many circumstances makes it crash at the moment. So KDE4.6 is the best - for now!
Example: If you have both KDE and Gnome (like me) you need fusion-icon for setting kwin when in KDE. If you forget to set it back to Compiz before you log out; Gnome-shell will crash and you can log in and out as much as you want - it will continue crashing until you have altered the setting (back to Compiz) in KDE.
Gnome3 is still a baby - I am confident that it will grow.
3d
KDE has it! Gnome3 does not. KDE is in front here.
Resources
Gnome3 is does not pull much CPU power and memory. It is light weight. KDE4.6 does pull way more CPU power.
There is no doubt: Gnome3 is ahead by a mile.

So can we conclude who is the best now?
No! :confused ;)

So I'll continue testing then.....

Yeah, was gonna say... KDE is slower than a turtle on valium here... and WAY resource-hogging (but then Gnome 3 is a bit resource intensive too, just nowhere near like KDE4.6).

Yes my lightweight comment may have been a bit hasty there. But in comparison to KDE4.6 it holds water.
Also Gnome3 has been updated twice already and the updates do reset the icon tweak above.

Yeah, noticed that on the first one... It was like, "wtf?" when they came up huge after that update.

Now lemme see if I can get conky to work. My standard file is not digested, and I prefer it over gkrellm.....

Also You will get back the familiar icons on the desktop that you are used to from Gnome2 if you activate the Have file manager handle the desktop in the tweak tool. (You know; the my computer and the bin etc)

OK I have given this thing a thorough spin now. And tweaked and tested to get it to my liking.
The first shock of no 3d and no Compiz is actually not to bad and anyway it is easily fixed by forcing fallback mode in the system settings,
One click on a menu and it is back:

The strange thing though, is that when I have forced the fallback I miss the new Gnome3 shell!
To make it look like the good old Gnome I set the file manager to handle the desktop in the tweak tool. Just to get that familiar look (that I actually don't need that much).
I have my conky working and the good old Wallpaper changer is back and working.
So this is surprising but I do not want to go back to the Old Gnome now -I prefer Gnome3. I also am "dual booting" with KDE4.6 but I do not log in there as much.
So Gnome3 has been sneaking up on me and now I am hooked. Indeed I prefer it to KDE and I have a hard time explaining why. It is just something about getting in the habit of using Gnome3 - the look and feel - that has captured me.

Sure I have not figured out to make a decent record of my desktop with Gtkrecordmydesktop. It removes the menu bar and makes it impossible to stop the recording :) unless I mark an area. I have Googled it but none of those suggestions work.
Fusion icon with metacity or kwin selected will crash Gome3 as sure as Amen in the church. The default menu without "power off" is a stroke on the part of the developers IMO but it is easily tweaked.
But if I chose to not provoke Gnome3 with the "bugs" I have found; it stays up and is functional. Very functional and very good!

I started out as a skeptic and had some initial trouble, on day one I hated it; "Why did they have to destroy my beloved Gnome" .
I intensified my flirt with KDE4.6 to punish this "fish cooking housewife". And now I have discoverd that she made a lobster :B :gimme

I feel a final conclusion coming up:
Image

Yes Gnome3 is better than Gnome2 and KDE4.6! +1

And tomorrow after the next update you'll hate it again.

Confusing a bit. First you say you can get compiz back with "fallback". Do you mean the fallback kernel? I have no fallback for Gnome.

Meh. Think I'm gonna keep with what I got - until it's more stable, I'm staying right here. I could install gnome-shell to the others I have, not have it be buggy, and be able to switch to old Gnome if I want.

I might hate it again if they fubar - but I have a good feeling now.

Regarding fallback you will find it on the menu to the upper right:
Pick system settings or something (I have it in norwegian it is the 4th line)
Pick system information (at the bottom)
In the new window
Pick Graphics (or something :) )
And click ON

Log out and log back in and you have Compiz etc.
No new kernel just the fallback mode for Computers that cannot handle the Graphics or for people who want it.
