Neither are functioning here! They're both OFF! I had to turn them both off! I had to turn them off when I started getting the pam auth error!

FWIW, I've just downgraded Xorg back to where it was on Oct. 21 when I filed the bug. We'll see how it goes.

It is a fair assumption that you will be turning it on again then? In my simple mind that is kind of necessary to get the xscreensaver to work.
The pam error message is common when you fail to log in.

Log in to what? I'm logged in to the desktop - that should be all that's necessary?

I've turned on gnome-screensaver as a test now, to see how it goes. If it fails again, I'm going to downgrade the kernel, and go from there. Right now, I don't care which one works first. I just want *something* to work, other than blanking, and not being able to resume from it.

*If* gnome-screensaver works, and I don't come in to this b.s. in the morning (the resuming from blanking bit), then I'll go for xscreensaver, and see if it works.

I'm scared of X right now - don't want to use much of an X anything. :P

Edit: Actually, yeah, I'm turning on xscreensaver, and disabling gnome-screensaver, so I have more reason to be ticked at X in the morning when it doesn't resume - AGAIN. #sarcasm - At least since I downgraded, now it's seeing that it is disabled.

I've run some searches btw - it appears that this is a fairly common issue (the resuming from blanking one) since last year with the nvidia driver - god.

Well, I'm trying it your way Boss - xscreensaver wouldn't even start once I'd downgraded. So, I've uninstalled gnome-screensaver; just have to figure out how to get xscreensaver to automatically start without me having to go to xscreensaver-demo and start it.

FYI, xscreensaver-demo is no longer in yaourt; glad I installed it when it was there. It's also not in the repos. Wondering what's up with that:

Code: Select all

yaourt xscreensaver
1 extra/xscreensaver 5.12-1 [3.03 M] [installed]
Screen saver and locker for the X Window System
2 aur/pidgin-light 2.7.5-1 (71)
A light pidgin version: msn, jabber, irc supported protocols without gstreamer, tcl, tk,
    xscreensaver support.No video/voice.  Includes finch
3 aur/pidgin-light-msngroup 2.5.4-1 (Out of Date) (5)
A light pidgin version: msn, jabber, irc supported protocols with a patch to use msngroups as
in WLM, but without gstreamer, tcl, tk, xscreensaver support.
4 aur/xmountains 2.8-1 (30)
Fractal Generator for the xwindow system, intergrates with xscreensaver
5 aur/xscreensaver-arch-logo 5.12-1 (168)
Screen saver and locker for the X Window System. Version with replaced art/logos/graphics to
better fit to the ArchLinux (Gnome,KDE,XFCE,...). Also adds enchanced desktop icon.
6 aur/xscreensaver-goban 1.1-2 (12)
A goban screensaver replaying famous games of go
7 aur/xscreensaver-passkeys 5.10-1 (10)
Patched version of xscreensaver to pass keypresses for the electric sheep screen saver.
8 aur/xtrascreenhacks 0.5-1 (4)
A collection of display modes that are based on and intended to be run with the XScreensaver
    distribution.

Meant to mention earlier - ditto here.

You are not very systematical are you? How on earth can you tell whats wrong when you alter your entire system for every minor problem?
With login I meant logging in via xscreensaver when you have set it to lock after 15 minutes or so. The pam error message will appear when you enter wrong password.
Now follow the xscreensaver manual step by step and report step by step and preferably without changing the kernel or doing Moon landings.

xscreensaver isn't starting anyway - can't do that. It says it is, but nary a screensaver ever comes on. :(

Also, I don't set to lock anyway, even when it is running.

Blanking's still happening, and resuming from it is still a bitch. :(

I am more than sure that whatever this is, it's not good for my monitor by now.

You have been doing a lot of stuff so I have no idea what to do with it. If I were you I would remove X and reinstall it.

Thinking on that very thing... and nvidia too...

Also have been thinking on something else. The front drive where Fedora *was* is bigger...

Another thing I'm considering - a resume hook.

Although, if this is a hard drive thing (as in hard drive not resuming) rather than an X issue I'm not so sure that would solve it.

I will say in dmesg, I do have:

Code: Select all

PM: Resume from disk failed.

Why would I be getting that?

Re-installed X today... will see what happens in the morning again. Sigh.

I came across this in the Archserver forum. Don't you use JFS?
I tried JFS once on my desktop, but my installation was killed by an unexpected power outage

No. I use reiserfs, not JFS.

Also, haven't had a power outage.
