Well not much I am afraid. But what exactly is given up is unclear to me too. The model is like RedHat/Fedora Suse/OpenSuse I think. So the community will have the open distro that will contribute back to the Enterprise solution.

So, then if they are giving up the distro to the community, and there in that case would not be anything much of the company itself, then why aren't they giving up the trademark to the community too?

Re: Mandriva 2012 installation problem

Postby viking60 » 10 Jul 2012, 10:30

ImageI managed to fubar my Bernie Lomax so I wanted to reinstall it!
It would freeze during installation when I used the existing partitions.
When using the entire disk everything works fine.
Any Gurus that can confirm this behavior?
I did format / and I did not format /home

If the installation steps are repeated exactly, I don't know why it would work the first time but not the next, except corrupted media, failing hardware, various corner cases that are not very likely. If you are installing in VB, that's another variable that I don't have experience with.

One thing comes to mind: there are two choices in the installer that are similar, 'use existing partitions' and 'custom disk partitioning'. I think they are similar because I always use 'custom disk partitioning', where I can use existing partitions and just format or not. Also, I think what software is used to make the partitions can make a difference as I see it talked about where gparted, or diskdrake, or CL, like cfdisk can make different results. I know I just formatted a CF card with gparted, after 'dd' had been used to write a live dvd to it, and it would not work until I told gparted to write the partition table, first, just for example. Partitioning methods can differ, with different results.
I think I have seen some workarounds suggested for installation problems, like at MIB :confused

Agreed! That is why I only discovered it the second time I tried to install it - in a different way. Fist time = "take the whole disk and do your stuff" (the blue option).
And the second time= use existing partitions.

That simply made wonder if the install does not work with those partitions. But I bet it would have if I had chosen to format /home also.
And yes it is VB, but it is not such a different animal :-D

As for the rest thanks! good to know. :greetings

Ok so I reinstalled the entire (64bit) enchilada and added the repos and updated.
At some point the graphics did not play allong so I could not see if the update went through so I turned off the computer and went to bed (it happens :-D )
The next day I log into Bernie and try to auto-update:

Code: Select all

Now given the history I am not all that surprised that the rpm database is fubared - so what to do?
I remembered my URPMI wiki updates where I had documented how to delete and rebuild the database so I deleted it and rebuilt it:

Code: Select all

[root@bernie thomas]# rm -rf /var/lib/rpm/__db*
[root@bernie thomas]# rpm --rebuilddb

And that just worked nicely so now I am happily updating Bernie Lomax Cooker.

So here I am back to square one:
Checked that I have gstreamer0.10-tools installed - and still no sound.
Installed 64bit flashpugin and that does not work in either firefox nor chromium.
Cheking
/usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/
and libflashplayer.so is simply not there so the options in MCC to install it, is simply "marketing" :-D
Other than that - the systems is snappy and responsive....

I installed flashplayer from here:
http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/fl ... x86_64.rpm
... and that did not help either so I am looking for libflashplayer.so now - it has to be somewhere... :confused
No - oh well looks like the rpm file does not compute so I will check out the good ol tip here:
viewtopic.php?f=25&t=687
And that just works! Thank God for the Tips and Tricks section :B
I did not use wget I only pasted this in the Firefox Address bar:

Code: Select all

http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/completion/?installer=Flash_Player_11.2_for_other_Linux_(.tar.gz)_64-bit

and installed according to Tip.
This is a bit strange though because I seem to recall that the rpm worked before... :confused

Now what else could I do to get some sound out of Bernie?

You could try the old way of installing it. Download the flash player tar.gz from the site, extract it, and copy the .so it contains to the plugins folders of your respective browsers. Just a thought. I know of a few who install it that way.

I believe you had said also that there were other browser(s?) that weren't working with it, too. It needs to be copied to each browser's plugins folder.

No putting it in /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins is enough.
