Okay, godd@mmit, I'm downgrading the nvidia driver. I'm tired of this total crap. It didn't fix it last time I tried it for this issue on Arch, but I've had it. I need to do something.

After some rather extensive observation and a bit of testing, I've figured out the problem, just don't know what to do about it. When dpms is disabled using xset (xset -dpms right at login), all is well and dandy, and the thing resumes fine. BUT, hit the power switch on it one time to turn it off, then dpms re-enables itself that second, and the thing takes 500 damn tries to get it to resume, whether the computer is on or not. I need to make it (somehow) not re-enable dpms permanently when the monitor is turned off. Ideas? There of course nothing in the monitor menu that I can find to do it. Samsung 731B. Thanks.

Either no one knows or cares, or I'm talking to myself here. It's okay. I got the same lack of response on fb, and when I asked my mate, so please don't everyone feel bad at once. Maybe now that school's out for break I can find a way to get to an actual computer and research it myself some more. I couldn't find it last time I was on a real computer, which is why I posted here. Until next time, have phun.

Does this give any clue as to what component is out on it? Thanks.

Doesn't matter. I've found the issue that has been so hard to describe. Evidently, Samsung Syncmasters are notorious for this, and other power issues.

It's gone from that, to now just flickering on and off constantly, another common known issue with Syncmasters.. I can't stop it. I'm going to have to get a new monitor, but even that's moot now as I'll have to get a whole new desktop anyway.

This is why playing with xset, playing with all kinds of things software-wise never helped. It's a hardware issue.

My mother's went out on her as well from a power issue; she just got a new monitor. Samsung 731b monitor known issues search. Don't get one of these, people. I will get another Samsung, as they normally make good products, but it won't be a Syncmaster.

That blanking deal has been a real annoyance, for me, whenever I install a new release. I run KDE and go round and round with power saving and screen management. I like the screen to stay on. When I'm lying on the bed/office chair, watching tv, I like to be able to see if something comes in on my email, or watch a movie w/o the screen blanking.

I don't know if it is related to what is vexing you but I have a little command set to run at every log-in to the KDE desktop, set via the handy little Autostart module in Systemsettings:

xset -dpms

and all is well, even with nvidia. :)

Had already done what you said there way back at the second post to this thread.

dedanna1029 wrote:One can also do:

Code: Select all

# xset dpms force off

<snip>

Hoping that will help, with the new version of xset installed with updates today.

---->I've just turned DPMS off for now, in case they fix this and I can go back with it. :)

I can alternatively:

Code: Select all

[root@dedanna dedanna]# ---->xset -dpms;xset s off
[root@dedanna dedanna]# xset q
DPMS (Energy Star):
  Standby: 0    Suspend: 0    Off: 0
----->DPMS is Disabled

And have it disabled. :)

Not really. I was describing an easy way to set up a script in KDE's systemsettings Autostart (not X11), which runs as normal user, not root, which solved a similar problem for me, using nvidia's driver. So, there are more than a couple of differences from what you described. Also, as I said, "I don't know if it is related to what is vexing you...", so, just offered as an observation, mostly, maybe containing a clue for you or someone else.
