Nautilus. I'm MAD. [It's an oversight, I'm sure.] Topic is solved

It appears Gnome devs have removed my ability to type in the folder that I want to go to; there's no more "location field" as it were, either in Fedora or Arch:



There is also no option to change it anywhere that I can find.

That really ticks me off. WTF were they thinking???

Sure it is! Just highlight a folder and start typing, then the field will become visible at the bottom right

Naw, man, I gotta have it for the location field! That only works for the folder you're in! Sometimes I'm off to /usr/thisorthat, or /var/lib/thisandthat. This sucks, I tell ya! Sucks! I wanna type in where I wanna go, and be able to go there with just the enter key!

Hmm seems I have not used it like you do - I don't miss a thing. It is no different in Mandriva. Well I am sorry for you of course, and KDE in ARCH is actually coming along nicely.

It's a file BROWSER. I should be able to BROWSE my files.

Just spotted a link to this post on twitter, had some time so thought I would reply. I thought this was a little irritating when Nautilus changed this. It is easily fixed however.

Open a terminal window and enter:

gconftool-2 -s -t bool /apps/nautilus/preferences/always_use_location_entry true

If this does not fix it, for whatever reason, hit Alt+F2 and run 'gconf-editor' and look under /apps/nautilus/preferences/ for that entry.

I've had chance to use this again, this time in Arch. I'm thinking about making this a sticky so it's easily accessible when needed. I've also moved to Tips 'n Tricks. If you run gconf-editor, you get a tree-style configuration view of this stuff to edit. If you look in /desktop/interface you can make some handy desktop tweaks for gnome like buttons_have_icons etc

You can use gconftool-2 to edit these on the command line.
