How to root a smart phone?

This is something that has been elusive to me from day one. I'm assuming the phrase "to root a smart phone" means to have root access. If I'm wrong, please correct me. I also need to know how to do it. I've seen programs that claim to, but I'm a bit leary on what's reliable.
Here is my phone.
Anyone?
Thanks.

Root access seems about right, along with voided warranty. I don't know anything more than you do. I've read about some interesting benefits for some phones my friends have, not even mine. It seems to me there are various methods and howtos. If I were to attempt something like this I would spend a lot of time comparing reports at the various forums where rooting of the particular device is discussed. Not that I think it's likely to be problematic, just that I would do my homework.

Ok, yeah, I get it then.
I think I'll leave it alone. Doesn't seem even privacy guard is worth it. I'd be researching for days and days, and I don't even have that kind of time. I don't have a warranty, as it's a prepaid phone, but even still, I don't want to run risks of harming the phone. Methinks if T-Mobile caught wind of it, they'd be a tad pissed. I'll give it another year at least, when I won't have to worry about it so much.
Thanks, rolf.

Well do tell how it is going because I have no Smartphone either. As long as my less spying cellphone is working - I will keep it.

Well, from me, there will be nothing to tell, because I don't think I'm going to do it, at least for a good healthy while.

Meant to follow up that I got my phone rooted in Scotland, and have taken a ton of crapola off of it. Gave me room for proggies I do use on it.
Problem is, I have no clue how it was done, because I didn't do it directly. It was an online thing, I think, that if one mounts their phone on the computer, goes to the site and follows the instructions, it roots the phone somehow. Anyway, it worked.
Never had so much fun with a phone in my life since. I highly recommend doing it.

I got a Samsung Galaxy S4 for the wife and I will take her S3. You bet that I am going to root the phone to get rid of all the bloatware like F-book, Twatter and more. Also, find a custom ROM to have my own Android distro.
Do not be confused... rooting is the ability to gain root access that is locked from the carrier. ROM install is the replacement if the phone OS.

That's what all I uninstalled, too, and more.
Why you want Android, when Meego's so much better? Hell, I may just put it on my netbook and phone both. Phone's out of warranty now, so I don't give a crap 'bout what I do now to it.

Aw, sorry P., just got 'round to checking it out - is just for the S3. I have a Gravity Smart, which is a fair few steps down from an S3.

I did get the phone rooted. Just need to see if meego can go on it now - so far there's an opinion of "no" IRL, unfortunately.

The video used a S3 as a demo. Rooting is pretty much the same for all phones.
